CHAPTER 2 — "THE CAMERA NEVER LIED."

Margaret believed she still controlled the family.

She was wrong.

Nathan had not returned home early by accident.

For weeks, strange expenses had appeared in the family's financial records.

Private investigators.

Cash withdrawals.

Legal consultations.

At first, Nathan assumed someone was preparing for a business takeover.

Then his chief financial officer quietly handed him a sealed envelope.

"Sir..."

"You should see this before signing anything."

Inside was a single photograph.

Emily.

Holding her newborn.

Standing outside a pediatric clinic.

Across the street...

A man with a camera was secretly photographing them.

The investigator's report contained one terrifying sentence.

Client requesting evidence to challenge maternal fitness and obtain emergency custody.

Nathan had stared at the page in disbelief.

Who would do such a thing?

The answer came one hour later.

The payment records.

Every invoice.

Every transfer.

Every signature.

Margaret Whitmore.

His own mother.

Nathan left the office immediately.

He raced home without calling anyone.

Without warning Emily.

Without knowing he was only minutes away from witnessing the nightmare himself.

Now...

Standing inside the nursery...

Everything made horrifying sense.

Margaret wasn't acting out of sudden anger.

She had been building this moment for weeks.

She wanted Emily frightened.

Bruised.

Emotionally unstable.

She wanted photographs.

Witnesses.

A story she could present to a judge.

"A dangerous mother who cannot care for her child."

Margaret straightened her designer jacket.

"You don't understand, Nathan."

"I understand perfectly."

"No."

She folded her arms.

"She's manipulating you."

Nathan slowly walked toward the nursery bookshelf.

Hidden among children's storybooks...

A tiny security camera blinked with a blue light.

Margaret frowned.

"What is that?"

Nathan removed the memory card.

"You insisted this nursery have cameras after Oliver was born."

Margaret's confidence vanished.

Emily looked up in confusion.

"You... kept them on?"

Nathan nodded.

"Twenty-four hours a day."

Margaret suddenly took one nervous step backward.

Nathan inserted the memory card into his phone.

The footage appeared instantly.

Crystal clear.

No missing angles.

No missing audio.

Everyone watched in silence.

Margaret entering first.

Locking the nursery door.

Grabbing Emily by the hair.

Dragging her across the floor.

Threatening her.

Blocking her from reaching the crying baby.

Every second...

Captured forever.

Emily covered her mouth.

She hadn't even realized the camera existed.

Margaret whispered...

"This can be explained."

Nathan looked at her with heartbreaking disappointment.

"No."

He pressed one button.

The video uploaded automatically to the family's private legal server.

Then another.

Copies were sent to the family attorney.

Then another.

To the board of Whitmore Holdings.

Finally...

To every trustee overseeing the Whitmore family fortune.

Margaret's hands began shaking.

"Nathan... delete it."

He stared at the woman who had raised him.

"You taught me that actions have consequences."

His voice was calm.

"So live by your own lesson."

Just then...

The mansion's front doorbell echoed through the house.

One servant hurried upstairs.

"Sir..."

"There are detectives here."

Nathan frowned.

"I didn't call the police."

The servant swallowed hard.

"They're asking for Mrs. Margaret Whitmore..."

"...regarding a reopened investigation."

Margaret's face turned ghost white.

Emily noticed it instantly.

Nathan did too.

The detective standing downstairs wasn't there because of today's assault.

He was investigating something that had happened...

Twenty-six years earlier.

Something involving a missing newborn.

And for the first time in decades...

Margaret looked truly afraid.
