CHAPTER 7 — "THE FIRE WASN'T MEANT TO DESTROY THE EVIDENCE... IT WAS MEANT TO KILL US."

The explosion shook Whitmore Manor from its foundation.

Windows shattered.

Crystal chandeliers swung violently overhead.

Emily instinctively threw herself over Oliver's bassinet.

Grace pulled two frightened housekeepers behind a marble pillar.

Nathan was already running.

"Richard's office!"

Smoke poured down the second-floor hallway like a black river.

Servants screamed as flames swallowed the antique oak doors.

"Nathan, stop!" Emily cried.

"It's too dangerous!"

But he didn't slow down.

That office wasn't just another room.

It held the last pieces of his father's life.

Victor caught up with him and grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher.

"The secret passage!" Victor shouted.

Nathan froze.

"What passage?"

Victor pointed toward an old portrait hanging at the end of the hall.

"Your grandfather built hidden escape routes during the Cold War. Richard showed me one years ago."

Together they pulled the massive portrait aside.

A narrow stone staircase appeared behind it.

Hot smoke filled the passage as they climbed upward.

When they reached the office...

The flames had already consumed half the room.

Bookshelves collapsed one after another.

Paintings burned.

The air was almost impossible to breathe.

Nathan wrapped a wet curtain around his face and searched desperately.

"There!"

Behind Richard's overturned desk...

A heavy steel safe remained untouched by the fire.

Nathan inserted the silver key Victor had given him.

It fit perfectly.

The lock clicked open.

Inside...

There wasn't gold.

There weren't company documents.

There was only a black flash drive...

A thick sealed envelope...

And a small velvet jewelry box.

Nathan stared in confusion.

"That's all?"

Victor nodded.

"Richard knew paper could burn."

"He stored everything that could destroy Edward in digital form."

Suddenly—

A loud crack echoed overhead.

The burning ceiling began collapsing.

"NATHAN!" Victor yelled.

They barely escaped as flaming wooden beams crashed onto the safe.

Outside...

Firefighters finally arrived.

Emily ran into Nathan's arms the moment he emerged through the smoke.

She touched his face.

His hands.

His shoulders.

"You scared me."

Nathan held her tightly.

"I'm okay."

Oliver began crying.

Nathan kissed his son's forehead.

"I promise..."

"No one is ever taking this family away from me."

But across the street...

Inside a parked black SUV...

A man watched the fire through dark sunglasses.

He smiled.

Then calmly made a phone call.

"They found the safe."

A voice answered from the other end.

"I expected they would."

"What now?"

The voice became colder.

"Move to Phase Two."

May you like

The call ended.

The SUV quietly disappeared into the night.
