Chapter 12 - The Fallout

Sitting at our kitchen island, holding a steaming mug of chamomile tea, Sloane stared down at the polished wood surface as the reality of her situation set in.

"I spent my entire life playing the role they wrote for me," Sloane whispered, her voice cracking. "I went to the right schools, wore the right clothes, agreed to marry a man who didn't love me because our parents shook hands on a golf course. And the second the money disappeared, they dropped me like an old shoe."

"I know the feeling," I said quietly, pouring myself a cup of coffee. "For thirty-seven years, I thought obedience equaled safety. It took losing everything—and gaining my real family—to realize that a golden cage is still a prison."

Sloane looked up, her red-rimmed eyes shifting from me to Clara. "How can you look at me with kindness, Clara? I was the woman your fiancé was supposed to marry under your nose."

"You were a prop in the same play we were all trapped in, Sloane," Clara replied gently, sitting down across from her. "None of us chose the roles your parents and Arthur Voss assigned us. But we get to choose what we do now."

Sloane wiped a tear from her cheek, taking a deep, shuddering breath. "What am I supposed to do, Julian? I don't know how to do anything. I’ve never held a real job. I don't know how to pay a utility bill."

"You start over," I said firmly, offering her a reassuring smile. "It’s terrifying at first. Trust me, I know. But it’s also the most liberating thing in the world. Our foundation is looking for an executive director to manage community outreach. The pay isn't a trust fund, but it’s an honest living, and you’ll actually be helping people instead of cutting ribbons at charity galas."

Sloane stared at me in shock, her lower lip trembling before a watery, grateful smile broke across her face. "You... you would offer me a job after everything?"

"Not because of who you were, Sloane," Clara added warmly. "Because of who you decide to be from here on out."
