Chapter 14 - The Setup

Two days later, the threat materialized into something tangible.
I was at the foundation’s downtown office reviewing grant applications when my head of security, Miller—a retired federal marshal who had joined our private detail—burst into my office without knocking.
"Mr. Voss, we have a problem," Miller said, slamming a tactical tablet onto my desk.
"What is it?"
"One of the shell companies tied to your father’s old syndicate just executed a massive wire transfer into a newly opened bank account under Clara’s name," Miller reported grimly. "And simultaneously, an anonymous tip was sent to the federal prosecutor's office claiming that the Voss Foundation is being used to launder illicit funds."
I stared at the tablet in horror. "They’re trying to frame Clara. They want to make it look like she’s dirty."
"If the feds take that tip seriously, they’ll freeze foundation accounts, slap an injunction on your properties, and drag Clara into an investigation," Miller warned. "Whoever is pulling the strings from the inside wants to destroy your family by attacking her."
"Who has access to the internal banking portals?" I demanded, standing up so fast my chair crashed backward.
"Only three people: You, the CFO, and corporate counsel," Miller replied.

My stomach dropped. The CFO was an old guard holdover appointed by my father ten years ago—Victor Vance’s former college roommate, a man named Henderson whom I had mistakenly trusted to clean house.
"Get the car," I ordered, grabbing my coat. "We’re going to the corporate office right now."
