Chapter 6 - The Jet Bridge Reunion

The glass-walled jet bridge was narrow, crowded with a slow-moving line of passengers waiting to step onto the aircraft. I pushed my way past a bewildered couple, ignoring their protests, my eyes darting frantically ahead.
And then I saw them.
Four identical navy sweaters marching in a neat line, flanked by a woman carrying a heavy diaper bag over her shoulder.
"Mom, Sebastian dropped his dinosaur toy back in the terminal!" Julian announced, stopping abruptly in the narrow corridor.
Clara sighed, turning around to check her bags. "Oh, Julian, we don't have time to go back—"
She stopped dead.
I stood ten feet away, panting, my hair disheveled, my tie ripped off and discarded somewhere in the terminal, looking every bit like a man who had just blown up his entire life.
Clara’s breath hitched. She dropped her bag with a dull thud against the carpet.
"Julian?" she whispered, her eyes wide with shock. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get past security?"
The four boys spun around simultaneously, their amber-speckled eyes locking onto me with pure, unadulterated awe.
"It’s the man from the restaurant!" Leo gasped, tugging on Clara’s sleeve. "Mom, why is he following us?"
I didn't answer right away. I crossed the distance between us slowly, stopping just inches from Clara. The roar of the jet engines outside hummed through the metal walls of the bridge, but the rest of the world faded into absolute silence.
"I blew up the engagement," I said, my voice shaking slightly as I looked down into her startled eyes. "I ousted my father as CEO, handed over the family empire to the board, and walked away from every single cent of the Voss fortune."
Clara stared at me, her lower lip trembling. "You... you did what? Julian, your family will destroy you. They own half of Boston!"
"Let them try," I smiled, reaching out to gently cup her cheek with my palm, feeling the warmth of her skin after six agonizing years in the cold. "They can take my money, my title, and my legacy. But they don't own me anymore. Not without you. Not without my boys."
A tear spilled over Clara’s eyelashes, but a radiant, breathtaking smile broke across her face.
Before she could speak, Julian stepped forward, crossing his arms with that exact, stubborn posture I saw every time I looked in the mirror.
"Are you really our dad?" Julian demanded, eyeing me with intense suspicion. "Because Mom said our dad was a superhero who lived far away, but you look like you just got chased by a bear."
May you like
I let out a breathless laugh, dropping to one knee so I was eye-to-eye with all four boys.
"I’m not a superhero, buddy," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion as I looked at my four sons. "I’m just a guy who spent six years looking for his family without knowing it. But I promise you... I’m never leaving again."
