Chapter 2 - The Digital Trap

Headline: "She Tried to Ruin a National Finalist—Until the Cloud Saved Everything."The blue strobes painted the icy patio in rhythm. Two uniform officers and Detective Vance rounded the corner of the house, their heavy boots crunching loudly in the crusted snow.

"Is everyone alright here?" Vance asked, his sharp eyes instantly locking onto the burning mess in the fire pit, then shifting to Vanessa’s soot-stained hands and the small black security lens glowing red overhead.

"Officer, this is a private family matter!" Elaine interjected, stepping between Vanessa and the police, her hands dripping with gold jewelry as she tried to project authority. "My husband is Senior Judge Robert Hayes. This is a simple domestic dispute over a broken electronic item that belonged to our family anyway!"

"It didn't belong to the family, Mrs. Hayes," Vance said coldly, pulling out a small tablet. "It belonged to Lily Miller. And according to the digital evidence uploaded automatically to our regional cyber-crime network, a premeditated act of destruction occurred here tonight."

Vanessa spun around, pointing a manicured finger directly at Lily. "She set me up! Mara set me up! That laptop was a fake! They tricked me into throwing it!"

Detective Vance paused, looking at Vanessa as if she had just confessed to being stupid on purpose. "Ma'am... are you arguing that because the item you intentionally threw into a fire was a different laptop than the one you intended to destroy, you didn't commit a crime?"

"She baited my daughter!" Robert yelled, his voice echoing through the quiet cul-de-sac. "Mara planted that machine to cause a scene!"

"I didn't plant anything," Lily’s voice finally broke through the cold air. It wasn't weak anymore. It was sharp, crystal clear, and full of courage.

She pulled her real laptop—a sleek, dark silver machine encased in heavy protective rubber—straight out of her oversized winter coat lining.

"My real project was in my coat the entire time," Lily said, looking directly into her aunt’s horrified eyes. "I knew Aunt Vanessa was going to try to ruin it. Do you know why? Because three days ago, when I left my notes on the kitchen counter during Sunday dinner, I found Madison taking photos of my algorithm code with her phone."

The yard went utterly silent.

Madison gasped from the doorway, her face going bright white. "I—I didn't! That's a lie!"

"Check her phone," Lily challenged, looking at Detective Vance. "My code has a custom digital watermark hidden in the command lines. If you look at Madison’s draft submission for the Midwest Science Fair, she didn't just try to help her grades—she tried to copy my entire disaster-mapping software and submit it under her own name!"

Vanessa turned to her daughter, her jaw dropping. "Madison... what is she talking about?"

"It’s true, isn't it?" I stepped forward, holding my phone high. "Vanessa didn't just want to destroy Lily’s work out of random cruelty. She did it because she realized Lily was going to submit her project tonight, and if Lily submitted first, Madison’s plagiarized submission would be flagged for absolute fraud by midnight!"

The puzzle pieces snapped together with an audible shock. Elaine looked at Madison, then at Vanessa, her aristocratic composure finally shattering into utter panic.

"Officer Vance," I said, tapping my screen one last time. "I’ve just uploaded the full multi-angle video of the fire, the audio of Vanessa admitting to the sabotage, and the digital logs of Madison accessing my daughter’s cloud drive without permission. The national scholarship board has already been notified and verified Lily’s master file at 11:15 PM."

Vance nodded to his partner. "Vanessa Hayes. Put your hands behind your back."

"No! Dad! Mom! Don't let them!" Vanessa shrieked as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists. "I was doing this for Madison! She needed that scholarship! She’s my daughter!"

"And Lily is mine," I said quietly as they led her away down the snowy driveway. "And nobody burns her dreams again."
