Chapter 3 - The Golden Child Collapses

Headline: "The Spoiled Cousin's Fake Life Came Crashing Down in 60 Seconds!"By 2:00 AM, the house on Maple Ridge Drive felt less like a family estate and more like an interrogation chamber.

Vanessa was sitting in a holding cell downtown, unable to post bail until her morning arraignment because Detective Vance had filed felony arson and destruction of property charges. Meanwhile, back at the house, my parents were frantically pacing the hardwood floor of the living room, trying to force me to pull the charges.

"You are going to ruin this entire family over a high school competition!" Elaine wept, sitting on the edge of the leather sofa while Madison sobbed hysterically into a blanket. "Madison’s reputation is completely ruined! The school board will expel her if this leaks!"

"She plagiarized software created for emergency rescue teams, Mother," I said calmly, sitting across from them while Lily finished double-checking her secure upload to the national competition portal. "She didn't just copy an essay. She stole code designed to save lives during natural disasters, all so you could brag about her at your country club luncheons."

Robert slammed his fist down on the dining table, rattling the antique glass decanters. "Enough, Mara! I command you to go to the station and tell the prosecutor you made a mistake! Tell them the fire was an accident! If Vanessa gets a record, my judicial board review will be compromised!"

I looked at my father with absolute pity. "You spent thirty years protecting Vanessa. When she wrecked her first car at eighteen while drunk, you paid off the local sheriff. When she got caught stealing answers in college, you donated a wing to the library. You raised a monster, Dad. And now the monster is eating your precious reputation."

"You wicked, ungrateful girl!" Elaine spat, her face contorted in real hatred now. "We gave you a roof over your head! We tolerated your little outcast daughter!"

"Tolerated?" Lily stood up from the desk, her laptop screen flashing green with a bold notification message: SUBMISSION CONFIRMED & VERIFIED.

"You didn't tolerate me, Grandma," Lily said, her voice filled with a powerful, quiet dignity. "You humiliated me. Every Thanksgiving, every Christmas, you bought Madison thousands of dollars in gifts while you gave me cheap store gift cards. You made me sit at the kid's table until I was fifteen. You told everyone I was 'slow' just because I didn't care about fashion or your high-society friends."

Lily walked over to the grand fireplace, looking at the long row of framed family portraits. Every single picture featured Vanessa, Madison, and my parents.

My portrait—and Lily’s—had been moved to the dark hallway by the laundry room years ago.

"You thought I was weak because I stayed quiet," Lily continued, looking directly at her grandfather. "But my mother taught me something you never taught Aunt Vanessa: how to build something real from scratch."

Just then, my phone buzzed on the coffee table.

It wasn't a text from the police. It wasn't a call from a lawyer.

It was a notification from the regional news desk of Ohio News 9.

My email—containing the crisp, high-definition video of Vanessa throwing the laptop into the fire while my parents watched and laughed—had just been opened by the station’s lead investigative reporter.

And he had just marked it URGENT / FRONT PAGE.
