Chapter 1

“She fell down the stairs. You know how Valentina is—always so clumsy.”
Those were the very first words Julián Arriaga spoke as he rushed into the emergency room at San Gabriel Hospital in Mexico City, carrying his unconscious thirteen-year-old daughter in his arms.
Dr. Mariana Salcedo didn't look first at her ex-husband's worried expression.
She noticed the white sock on the girl's foot, stained with a trail of blood.
Then she caught the faint smile Julián tried to hide.
Mariana knew that smile.
It was the one he wore whenever he believed he had everything under control.
Valentina lay unconscious beneath the bright trauma room lights.
Her damp hair clung to her forehead.
A dark bruise spread across her jaw.
Her breathing was dangerously shallow.
Mariana was the hospital's Medical Director.
She had faced devastating accidents, impossible surgeries, and countless sleepless nights.
But in that moment...
She wasn't anyone's supervisor.
She was the woman who made Valentina mild chilaquiles because she couldn't handle spicy food...
Who had taught her to ride a bicycle in Chapultepec Park...
And who, two years earlier, had signed her adoption papers with trembling hands and tears of joy.
"Full trauma protocol," Mariana ordered.
"Call Social Services and the Child Protection Team."
Julián let out a dry laugh.
"Don't start your little performance, Mariana.
It was just a household accident."
Dr. Esteban Rojas, Chief of Emergency Medicine, looked at Mariana with concern.
She walked to the stretcher and gently rolled up Valentina's sleeve.
Then she saw them.
Fresh bruises.
Older bruises fading to yellow.
One mark stood out from the rest.
It was rectangular...
With one broken corner...
Exactly like the imprint of a metal object.
Mariana slowly lowered her eyes to Julián's belt.
The silver belt buckle had the exact same chipped corner.
For a moment, the room seemed to lose all its air.
But she didn't step back.
Julián leaned close to her ear.
He smelled of whiskey and mint.
"She's not even your real daughter," he whispered.
"You're just the stepmother.
Stay out of this."
Mariana slowly lifted her gaze toward the security camera mounted on the ceiling.
The hospital had upgraded its surveillance system after a nurse was assaulted.
Every camera recorded both video and audio.
"She became my daughter the day I adopted her," Mariana replied calmly.
"And you just said that... inside my hospital."
The color drained from Julián's face.
Just for a second.
Then the mask of the respectable businessman returned.
"I'm her biological father.
In front of a judge, your word isn't worth any more than mine."
What he didn't know...
Was that Mariana had spent the past eighteen months documenting every change in Valentina's behavior.
Her fear of asking for a glass of water.
The long sleeves she insisted on wearing even during the hottest days.
The endless apologies.
And one heartbreaking sentence the girl had whispered almost too quietly to hear:
"Dad changes when he gets angry.
If I tell anyone...
No one will believe me."
A nurse suddenly rushed into the room holding a cracked cellphone.
"Doctor...
We found this hidden inside her boot."
The screen displayed 42 unsent video recordings.
The moment Julián saw the phone, he lunged forward to grab it.
Two security guards intercepted him before he could reach Mariana.
At that exact moment...
Valentina's heart monitor erupted into a desperate alarm.
As the medical team rushed to stabilize her, Julián struggled against the guards.
"If anything happens to her...
It'll be your fault!"
Mariana took the teenager's cold hand.
"No."
"Everything that happens from this moment on...
Will be the consequence of what you did."
Above them...
The tiny red light on the hospital security camera remained steadily illuminated.
Julián still had no idea...
May you like
Valentina hadn't recorded only what happened that morning.
She had spent months preserving a truth...
