Chapter 7 - THE FINAL STANDThe heavy, choking mist of the Halon gas swirled around Don Leonardo Arriaga’s polished Italian leather shoes as he stepped into the intensive care unit. His silver hair was perfectly combed, his expression completely devoid of remorse, his eyes fixed with chilling malice on Mariana, who stood cradling Valentina tightly against her chest.

"Put the girl down, Dr. Salcedo," Don Leonardo commanded, raising the suppressed pistol until the black barrel was pointed squarely at Mariana's forehead. "You have played a remarkably dangerous game of hero. But every game must come to an end."

Judge Elena Morales instantly whipped her service pistol around, aiming directly at Don Leonardo’s chest. "Drop your weapon, Don Leonardo! You are surrounded by federal jurisdiction! The entire building is locked down by anti-corruption forces!"

Don Leonardo didn't even flinch. He didn't look at the judge; his gaze remained locked on Mariana with predatory amusement.

"Surrounded by who, Judge?" Don Leonardo chuckled darkly. "The men downstairs were bought and paid for before you even graduated law school. By morning, the official report will state that a deranged, unstable stepmother suffered a psychotic break, set fire to the pediatric ward, and tragically perished along with the child."

He took another slow step forward, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger.

"A clean story," Don Leonardo whispered. "Just like Lucía's."

Valentina let out a weak, terrified whimper, burying her face deeper into Mariana's lab coat, her small fingers clutching the fabric with desperate strength.

"Don't look at him, my love," Mariana whispered into the girl's hair, her own heart hammering against her ribs like a sledgehammer. She looked up at Don Leonardo, her eyes burning with an unyielding, ferocious fire that completely eclipsed her fear. "You think killing us will bury the truth? The Supreme Court already has the files. The encrypted ledger has an automated mirror set to broadcast live to international media outlets if my biometric vitals flatline."

Don Leonardo’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of genuine uncertainty.

"You're bluffing," he hissed.

"Am I?" Mariana challenged, her voice ringing steady and clear across the smoke-filled room. "Your son thought the same thing. Look where he is now. You’re an old man, Don Leonardo, standing at the end of a collapsing dynasty, holding a gun you're too cowardly to fire without an audience."

A vein throbbed violently on Don Leonardo's temple. Enraged by her defiance, his finger twitched downward on the trigger.

"Then die with your secrets!" he screamed.

BANG.

The suppressed gunshot cracked sharply through the sterile air.

At that exact millisecond, Dr. Esteban Rojas hurled a heavy stainless-steel instrument tray directly at Don Leonardo’s face. The tray struck the patriarch's arm just enough to throw off his aim.

The bullet shattered the glass observation panel behind Mariana, showering the floor with glittering shards.

Judge Morales didn't hesitate. Two rapid gunshots echoed through the ward.

Bang! Bang!

The first bullet struck Don Leonardo's shoulder, spinning him violently around. The second bullet shattered the biometric override pad in his hand, sending sparks flying across the floor.

Don Leonardo staggered backward, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his eyes wide with shock and disbelief as he hit the wall.

Before he could recover, Judge Morales closed the distance, kicked his pistol away across the floor, and slammed him face-first against the steel-reinforced door, snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists with a definitive, echoing click.

"Don Leonardo Arriaga," Judge Morales panted, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "You are under arrest for the murder of Lucía Arriaga, conspiracy, domestic terrorism, and attempted assassination of a federal judge and a medical officer."

As Don Leonardo was shoved brutally to his knees, coughing from the lingering Halon gas, Mariana didn't look back.

She turned around, threw open the emergency medical shaft door, and handed Valentina directly into the arms of the tactical medical team waiting below in the subterranean bay.

"Get her to the federal trauma center downtown immediately!" Mariana ordered, her voice cracking with emotion. "Administer pure oxygen and prepare for immediate neurological evaluation!"

"Doctor, you need to come with us," the lead medic urged, holding open the stretcher lift.

Mariana looked down at her blood-stained lab coat, then back toward the door where Don Leonardo was being dragged away into the elevator by federal agents.

She took a deep, steadying breath of the fresh air rushing up from the lower shaft.

"No," Mariana said softly, a faint, resolute smile touching her lips. "I have a hospital to run. And a family to rebuild."
