Chapter 6 - THE APEX PREDATOR ARRIVESThe clinical silence of San Gabriel Hospital's third-floor intensive care unit was instantly shattered by the wailing of an internal perimeter alarm.

Warning: Perimeter Breach at Emergency Ambulance Bay. Manual Override Activated.
Judge Elena Morales’s hand instantly dropped to her holster, her fingers wrapping around the grip of her service pistol. "He's here," she muttered, her eyes darting toward the heavy double doors of the ICU. "He knows the Supreme Court has the files, and he's coming to finish what he started."
Mariana didn't hesitate. She stepped between Valentina’s bed and the entrance, her posture rigid, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped animal.
"Esteban," Mariana commanded without turning her head. "Lock down this ward from the inside. Engage the secondary blast shields on the windows and doors."
"On it!" Esteban scrambled to the master control panel on the wall, punching in the emergency lockdown code.
With a heavy, mechanical groan, thick steel shutters slid down over the observation windows, sealing the ICU off from the rest of the hospital corridors. The only way in was through the reinforced biometric security door—a door that required both Mariana's administrative thumbprint and her verified voice command to open.
Outside in the hallway, the sound of heavy, measured footsteps echoed against the tile floor.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
Slow, deliberate, and entirely devoid of fear. The footsteps of a man who believed he owned the world, and who had never faced a consequence he couldn't buy off.
A heavy blow slammed against the reinforced glass of the security door.
BOOM.
Then another.
"Dr. Salcedo," a voice purred through the exterior intercom speaker. It was smooth, cultured, and dripping with aristocratic menace—the voice of Don Leonardo Arriaga. "Be a sensible woman. Open this door, hand over the minor, and let us resolve this family matter quietly. You are a brilliant physician; it would be a terrible tragedy if your career—and your life—ended in a tragic hospital fire tonight."
Mariana stepped up to the intercom speaker, her finger pressing the talk button. Her voice was remarkably steady, ringing cold and clear through the corridor speakers.
"Your son is in federal custody, Don Leonardo," Mariana replied, her voice echoing down the empty hallway. "And your empire is currently being dismantled brick by brick by the Supreme Court. The only thing waiting for you in this hospital is a jail cell."
A chilling laugh echoed from the other side of the door.
"My son is a fool who lacked discipline," Don Leonardo chuckled darkly. "He let sentimentality get in the way of family business. But me? I built the Arriaga dynasty on blood, silence, and absolute control. Do you really think a few digital files and a corrupt judge can erase forty years of power?"
Suddenly, the intercom hissed, followed by the terrifying sound of a heavy industrial mechanical whir.
Esteban gasped, staring in horror at the central monitoring console. "Mariana! They're not trying to break the door... they're pumping gas through the hospital's central HVAC ventilation system!"
"Halon gas?!" Mariana’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "That's an industrial fire suppressant! It displaces all oxygen in a sealed room within sixty seconds!"
"The ventilation override!" Esteban yelled, frantically slamming his hands onto the control panel keyboard. "It's locked from the main terminal downstairs! They've hacked our own building management system!"
A sweet, chemical odor began to drift faintly from the ceiling vents above Bed 4. Valentina stirred weakly in her sleep, letting out a faint, distressed cough as her heart rate monitor spiked into an erratic yellow rhythm.
"She won't survive sixty seconds of oxygen deprivation in her condition!" Judge Morales shouted, drawing her weapon and aiming it desperately at the ceiling vents. "We need to get her out of here—now!"
"There's no time to use the elevators or the stairs!" Mariana yelled, scanning the room frantically as the sweet chemical smell grew stronger, thickening the air into a hazy white mist. "The entire eastern wing is saturated!"
Valentina began to cough violently, her eyes fluttering open in a panicked, disoriented daze.
"M-Mom...?" the young girl whispered weakly, her small hand clawing feebly at the blankets. "It's cold... I can't breathe..."
Mariana rushed to the bedside, scooping Valentina into her arms, pulling the oxygen mask tightly over the girl's face.
"I've got you, my love," Mariana choked out, tears burning her eyes. "I've got you. You're safe."
"Dr. Salcedo!" Esteban yelled from across the room, coughing heavily as the Halon gas filled the air. "The emergency medical shaft! Behind the supply closet! It leads directly to the subterranean ambulance bay where federal extraction units are waiting!"
"Open it!" Mariana commanded.
Esteban threw his body weight against the heavy steel panel of the supply closet, ripping it open to reveal a vertical medical dumbwaiter shaft just large enough for a stretcher—or a desperate escape.
But as Esteban reached inside to pull the emergency release lever, a heavy shadow fell across the doorway.
The reinforced biometric security door—the one protected by Mariana's own thumbprint—slowly hissed open with a loud, mechanical pop.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the hazy white chemical smoke, was Don Leonardo Arriaga.

In his right hand, he held a sleek, military-grade biometric override pad. In his left hand, he held a suppressed automatic pistol, pointed directly at Mariana's chest.
"Game over, Doctor," Don Leonardo smiled coldly, stepping into the room. "Let's see how well your digital files protect you when you're lying in a morgue."
