CHAPTER 1 – The Dog Everyone Wanted Gone

"I'm done living with that monster!"
Those were the first words my wife screamed that morning as she stormed into the kitchen, her eyes red with anger and tears.
She yanked up the sleeve of her sweater.
Fresh bruises.
Deep bite marks.
"You see this? Your precious dog did this to me again!"
I stared at the wounds, unable to speak.
For ten years, Bella had been my shadow.
She had slept beside my bed after my father died.
She had waited outside the hospital for hours after my car accident.
She had never once growled at a child, a stranger, or even another animal.
She wasn't just a dog.
She was family.
"There has to be another explanation," I whispered.
My wife slammed her hand on the table.
"Another explanation? She's trying to kill me! Every single day she attacks me while you're at work."
Bella lay quietly in the corner.
She wasn't barking.
She wasn't growling.
She simply stared at my wife with those old brown eyes, almost as if she understood every word.
Something about that look unsettled me.
It wasn't anger.
It was fear.
For the first time in years, Bella looked terrified.
My wife pointed toward the door.
"Either she goes... or I do."
The ultimatum echoed through the house.
I looked at Bella.
She slowly lowered her head but never took her eyes off my wife.
That night, I couldn't sleep.
Something didn't make sense.
If Bella had suddenly become aggressive, why did she only attack my wife?
Why never me?
Why never our neighbors?
Why only when I wasn't home?
The questions kept circling in my mind.
The next morning, before leaving for work, I secretly installed a tiny security camera above the kitchen cabinet.
No one knew.
Not even my wife.
"If Bella really has changed," I told myself, "I'll see it with my own eyes."
That evening, my wife greeted me with another story.
"She attacked me again today."
Another bruise.
Another demand.
"Please... take her to the shelter tomorrow."
I nodded quietly.
"I'll think about it."
She smiled with relief.
It was the first genuine smile I'd seen from her in days.
But instead of going to bed, I locked myself in the bedroom.
Hands shaking, I opened the camera footage.
The video began.
Bella was lying peacefully on the kitchen floor.
Minutes passed.
Nothing happened.
Then my wife walked into the room.
Bella immediately stood up.
Within seconds...
She charged.
Barking.
Pulling at my wife's sleeve.
Trying desperately to stop her.
I felt sick.
"My God... she wasn't lying."
I almost closed the app.
Then I noticed something strange.
Bella wasn't aiming for my wife's arms.
She kept jumping toward...
...my wife's jacket pocket.
I rewound the footage.
Watched again.
Again.
Again.
Every attack was directed at that same pocket.
My heart began pounding.
"What is she trying to reach?"
I fast-forwarded another minute.
Then I saw something that made every drop of blood leave my body.
My wife slowly pulled a small plastic bottle out of her pocket...
looked around to make sure no one was watching...
and poured several clear drops into the pot of soup she knew I would eat that night.
Bella wasn't attacking her.
Bella was trying to stop her.
And suddenly...
May you like
I realized the dog wasn't protecting herself.
She was protecting me.
