CHAPTER 5 – Bella's Last Secret

The trial was over.

My wife received eighteen years in prison.

Eric was sentenced to twenty-two.

The headlines called Bella a hero.

Television stations wanted interviews.

Animal rescue organizations offered to adopt her if I ever needed help.

But Bella didn't care about any of it.

She only cared that I was finally safe.

For the first time in months, she slept peacefully beside the fireplace instead of guarding the kitchen door every night.

Life slowly returned to normal.

Or at least, I thought it had.

A few weeks later, Bella stopped eating.

She moved more slowly.

The sparkle in her warm brown eyes began to fade.

The veterinarian examined her carefully before looking at me with sympathetic eyes.

"She's very old."

"There isn't much time left."

Those words shattered me.

The dog that had saved my life countless times was quietly preparing to leave hers.

That evening, I sat beside Bella on the porch where we used to watch sunsets together.

I stroked her gray muzzle.

"You've done enough," I whispered.

"You can finally rest."

Bella gently licked my hand.

Then, with surprising effort, she stood up and walked toward the garage.

She had not entered that room in years.

Curious, I followed.

She stopped beside an old wooden workbench that had belonged to my late father.

She scratched the floor twice.

Then she looked back at me.

I knelt and noticed one loose floorboard.

Using a screwdriver, I carefully lifted it.

Underneath was a small rusted metal box covered in dust.

Inside were dozens of photographs...

old letters...

and a thick envelope with my name written on the front.

My hands trembled.

The handwriting belonged to my father.

I opened the letter.

"If you're reading this, Bella has decided it's finally safe for you to know the truth."

My heart nearly stopped.

My father explained that years before he died, he had discovered someone stealing company records.

Afraid the evidence would disappear, he hid every document beneath the garage floor.

The only witness who watched him every night was Bella.

He trained her to guard that exact place.

To never allow anyone suspicious near it.

Even after his death...

she never forgot.

The documents inside the box proved that my father had spent years helping Eric's family in secret—paying school tuition, medical bills, even sending anonymous financial support after Eric's father went to prison.

He had carried guilt for something he never actually did.

Tears rolled down my face.

May you like

Bella hadn't only protected my life.

She had protected my father's final wish for over a decade
