Chapter 2 - The Phantom Children & The Shadow of the Past

By morning, the mansion was buzzing. Nathan immediately dispatched his private jet to West Virginia to retrieve Emily’s three young siblings and their elderly caretaker, Aunt Clara.

When the three children arrived at the Greenwich estate, Nathan greeted them with open arms. Johnny, a frail boy with bright eyes, held Emily’s hand tightly. Paul was quiet and watchful, while little Lily giggled as Nathan lifted her into his arms. For the first time in ten years, Emily felt a glimmer of pure peace.

However, peace was short-lived in the Carter family.

At 10:00 AM, Mrs. Margaret Carter slammed open the doors of the main living room, flanked by two private investigators and a high-profile family lawyer.

"Nathan! You have fallen for a master swindler!" Margaret screamed, hurling a dossier of papers onto the glass coffee table. "You think she’s an innocent martyr? Look at these!"

Nathan picked up the papers. They were fraudulent legal documents listing three different men—convicted felons from West Virginia—as the legal fathers of Johnny, Paul, and Lily, complete with forged birth certificates bearing Emily’s name as the mother.

"She forged these documents years ago to claim government benefits!" Margaret declared triumphantly. "She’s a criminal, Nathan! A liar who dragged our family name through the mud!"

Emily went pale. "That's not true! I never signed those documents! My father’s name was David Vance—he was an engineer!"

At the mention of "David Vance," Margaret’s face twitched imperceptibly, a momentary flicker of fear darting through her icy eyes before she quickly masked it with rage.

"Don't lie to me, girl!" Margaret snapped. "You're getting out of this house today, or I am calling the police!"

"Touch her, and you'll answer to me, Mother," Nathan warned, his voice deadly cold. "I know the truth. I saw the scars. Emily is my wife, and her family is my family. If you press this, I will strip you of your seat on the Carter Board of Directors."

Margaret sneered. "You think you're untouchable, Nathan? You forget who built the foundation of Carter Enterprises. You have chosen a maid over your own blood. You will regret this."

Margaret stormed out, but Nathan caught the lingering look of terror in her eyes when Emily spoke her father's name: David Vance.

Why did the name of an obscure engineer from West Virginia make the untouchable matriarch of the Carter empire flinch?

Nathan immediately called his chief security analyst, Marcus. "Investigate David Vance. Investigate the fire that destroyed his home ten years ago, and check every corporate file connected to my late father and Margaret from that exact period."
