Chapter 3 - The Gala of Venom

A week later, the annual Carter Enterprises Gala was held at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. It was the premier event of the business season. Against his mother's demands, Nathan walked the red carpet holding Emily’s hand. Emily wore an elegant dark blue silk gown that covered her back and chest, looking every bit the high-society wife, though her heart pounded like a trapped bird.

The elite crowd whispered behind their champagne glasses.

"Is that the maid?"

"I heard she had three kids by three different hillbillies!"

"Nathan must have lost his mind!"

Nathan squeezed her hand tightly. "Ignore them, my love. You belong here more than any of them."

Suddenly, the lights dimmed, and Margaret Carter stepped up to the podium with a microphone in hand. The crowd went quiet.

"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen," Margaret announced, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "Tonight is a celebration of truth, legacy, and integrity. As many of you know, my son recently married. However, as the head of the Carter Family Trust, it is my duty to protect this empire from deceit."

Nathan’s eyes narrowed. "What is she doing?"

A giant projection screen behind Margaret flashed to life. Pictures flooded the screen—photographs of Emily in her housekeeper uniform, juxtaposed with the forged birth certificates framing her as a mother of three by criminal fathers. But worse, Margaret had hired three actor-impostors who walked onto the stage, claiming live on camera that Emily had seduced them and abandoned them.

The crowd gasped in horror. Flashes from news cameras blinded the room.

"Emily Vance is an impostor who infiltrated my home to extort money from my son!" Margaret shouted into the microphone. "And tonight, justice is served!"

Two uniformed police officers entered the ballroom, walking straight toward Emily.

"Emily Carter, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny," the officer declared, pulling out handcuffs.
