Chapter 10 - The Doctor's True VictoryThirty minutes later, I stood scrubbed and gowned in Operating Room 3.

The harsh overhead surgical lights cast a brilliant, sterile glow across the stainless-steel instruments laid out neatly on the tray. My hands were steady. My mind was clear. There was no trace of Nathan, no memory of Olivia, no shadow of the past lingering in my thoughts.
"Scalpel, Doctor Carter?" the surgical nurse asked, holding out the instrument.
"Scalpel," I replied, taking it with absolute confidence.
As I made the precise, life-saving incision, I thought about the little boy in the hospital lobby—innocent, beautiful, and completely detached from the wreckage of his parents' lies. Social services had already placed him in temporary care while the legal dust settled, and despite everything, I had quietly arranged for a trust fund to be set up for him through an anonymous donor. After surgery, as I walked out of the scrub room into the quiet doctors' lounge, my phone buzzed on the table.
It was a text message from an unknown federal prosecutor's number.
Case update: Nathan Brooks has officially confessed to corporate fraud and named Richard Vance as his co-conspirator. Asset liquidation underway. Total recovery projected at 100%. Case closed.
I locked my phone, tossed it onto the sofa, and poured myself a cup of hot black coffee.

Outside the large window, the Chicago rain had finally stopped, and brilliant rays of afternoon sunlight were breaking through the clouds, illuminating the sprawling, beautiful city below.
I took a slow sip, smiled to myself, and walked back down the hallway—not looking back for even a single second.
