Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Verdict


Six months later, the dust had completely settled.
Grant Holloway was currently facing trial on multiple counts of federal securities fraud and corporate conspiracy, courtesy of Jessica's former firm throwing him under the bus to save themselves. He had lost his job, his reputation, his assets, and any remaining shred of his dignity. He had tried sending me three handwritten letters begging for a second chance, pleading for financial assistance. I didn't even open them; my lawyers fed them straight into the shredder.
I stood on the expansive back porch of the Langley estate, the autumn wind rustling through the golden leaves of the massive oak trees surrounding the property. Maya was resting peacefully in her stroller beside me, her bright eyes wide and curious as she watched the clouds drift across the bright blue Virginia sky.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out to find a secure message from General Vance: Orders have cleared, Colonel. You're officially being promoted to Brigadier General. Formal ceremony is next Tuesday.
I smiled, slipping the phone back into my pocket.
