Chapter 15 - The Unannounced Visitor

Late Tuesday afternoon, as the shadows lengthened across the estate's sprawling gardens, the security gate intercom chimed at the entrance of the property.

Mrs. Gable answered it from the main house console. "General Langley's residence. State your business."

A hesitant, strained voice crackled through the speaker. "Mrs. Gable? It’s... it’s Eleanor Holloway. Grant’s mother."

Tessa, standing near the foyer, heard the name and paused. Eleanor Holloway had always been a distant, critical figure during Tessa and Grant’s marriage—a woman who believed her son had married beneath him when he chose an army officer instead of a corporate socialite.

"Put her through to the main speaker," Tessa instructed quietly.

"Eleanor," Tessa’s voice came over the intercom, calm and composed.

"Tessa... thank goodness you’re there," Eleanor’s voice trembled on the other end, sounding small and broken. "I... I don't know who else to turn to. Grant is in federal custody. They won't let me visit him. His apartment has been seized, his bank accounts are frozen, and... and the media is camped outside my house in Richmond."

Tessa listened without interrupting, feeling neither pity nor malice—only a profound, detached clarity.

"I tried to tell him," Eleanor continued, her voice breaking into quiet sobs. "I told him he was making a terrible mistake leaving you, especially after the baby was born. But he wouldn't listen. He was so blinded by that woman, so convinced he was going to be a rich man... Tessa, please. Can your lawyers do something? Can you use your influence to get him out?"

"Eleanor," Tessa said, her voice steady and immovable. "Grant chose his path the night he locked me out of our home while I was in active labor. He chose his path when he tried to strip me of my rights, humiliated me in front of strangers, and sold out his security clearance to corporate criminals."

"He’s your husband—"

"He was my husband," Tessa corrected gently. "Legally, socially, and morally, that contract is dissolved. The federal charges against him are the result of his own choices, not mine. I suggest you retain independent counsel, because the Langley estate will not be extending financial or legal assistance."

The line fell completely silent on the other end, save for the soft sound of weeping. Then, the connection clicked dead.

Tessa closed the intercom panel and turned away. There was no triumph in the rejection, only the closing of a painful chapter that should never have been opened in the first place.
