Chapter 16 - The Promotion Gala

The grand ballroom of the military officers' club in Washington, D.C., glittered under massive crystal chandeliers. Uniforms pressed to absolute perfection, medals gleaming in the warm light, and dress blues contrasted sharply with the elegant evening gowns of guests gathered to celebrate the latest promotions within the Department of Defense.

At the center table sat Brigadier General Tessa Langley, wearing her dress uniform with the gleaming silver star proudly displayed on her epaulets. Beside her sat General Marcus Vance, raising a glass of sparkling cider in a toast.

"To the youngest Brigadier General in the strategic command," General Vance announced, his voice carrying warmth and respect across the table. "And a woman who proves every single day that real strength never has to raise its voice."

Surrounding tables erupted in applause. Colleagues, intelligence directors, and senior military officials nodded with deep admiration. Tessa stood, offering a gracious smile and raising her glass in return.

"Thank you, General, and thank you to everyone here," Tessa said clearly, her voice echoing through the hall. "Service to our country is not measured by the noise we make, but by the quiet resolve we maintain when the storm hits. We serve because we protect what matters most—our nation, our families, and the unbreakable truth that integrity outlasts ambition."

As the applause swelled, the heavy double doors at the entrance of the ballroom opened, and a commotion broke out near the security checkpoint.

A disheveled figure in a cheap, ill-fitting suit had managed to slip past the outer lobby security. It was Grant Holloway. He had apparently been released on conditional bail pending trial preparation, and in a desperate, delusional haze, he had tracked Tessa down to the gala.

"Tessa!" Grant shouted, lunging forward past the startled civilian coat-check attendants before two military police officers intercepted him with practiced precision. "Tessa, please! You have to listen to me! They’re going to put me away for twenty years! You can fix this with a single phone call!"

The entire ballroom fell dead silent. Heads turned in shock as Grant thrashed against the iron grip of the military police, his face flushed with panic and utter desperation.

Tessa didn't flinch. She didn't drop her glass. She simply set it down gently on the table and turned her gaze toward the man who had once told her she was dead weight.
