Chapter 24 - The Pentagon Briefing

Inside the secure underground command center of the Pentagon, the air hummed with the quiet urgency of screens flickering with global tactical data. Major General Tessa Langley stood at the head of a long, obsidian conference table surrounded by senior intelligence analysts, cybersecurity directors, and representatives from the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"The structural integrity of the Eastern Command's digital firewall has successfully repelled three distinct foreign intrusion attempts this month," Tessa reported, her voice calm, commanding, and resonant. "However, as our intelligence feeds indicate, state-sponsored actors are shifting their focus toward domestic corporate supply chains—specifically targeting civilian defense contractors who lack robust internal vetting protocols."

General Marcus Vance, now retired from active duty but serving as a senior strategic advisor to the Secretary of Defense, nodded approvingly from the opposite end of the table.

"An oversight vulnerability that nearly crippled our tactical logistics a decade ago," Vance noted, his eyes locking onto Tessa with deep professional respect. "A vulnerability we successfully neutralized thanks to Colonel—now Major General—Langley’s decisive intervention."

The room murmured in agreement. Tessa’s reputation across the armed forces was legendary. She was known not just for her tactical brilliance, but for an unshakeable moral compass that could not be bought, bullied, or compromised.

"We are drafting a mandatory compliance protocol for all third-party defense suppliers," Tessa continued, bringing up a detailed schematic on the main tactical display. "Every contractor seeking federal clearance must submit to rigorous background audits overseen directly by our internal security division. No loopholes. No shortcuts."

"Approved," the presiding Undersecretary of Defense stated immediately. "Draft the directive, General Langley. You have full executive authority to implement it nationwide."

As the meeting adjourned, Vance lingered behind as the other officers filtered out of the briefing room. He walked over to Tessa as she packed her tactical portfolio.

"You've built an incredible legacy, Tessa," Vance said softly, leaning against the edge of the table. "Not just for the military, but for Maya. Your grandfather would be looking down from heaven right now with the biggest smile you've ever seen."

"Thank you, General," Tessa replied, offering a warm, genuine smile. "Everett always said that building a strong house requires a deep foundation. I just made sure ours was forged in granite, not sand."
