Chapter 18 - The Reconstruction of Peace

The morning sun rose over the Potomac River, casting a brilliant golden glow across the manicured lawns of the Langley estate. Inside the grand library, Tessa sat at her desk reviewing operational deployment reports for her new division, her mind sharp and focused.
The trial of the corporate shell company concluded later that week, resulting in multi-year prison sentences for the primary executives and a permanent federal injunction barring anyone associated with the conspiracy from holding defense-related contracts. Grant Holloway pled guilty to lesser charges of unauthorized data access and corporate conspiracy in exchange for a reduced sentence of five years in a federal penitentiary—a sentence that ensured he would spend the prime of his life behind bars, contemplating the cost of his boundless arrogance.
Mrs. Gable walked into the library carrying a small silver tray with fresh coffee and a note.
"A dispatch from General Vance’s office, ma'am," Mrs. Gable said respectfully.
Tessa broke the secure seal and unfolded the thick parchment. It was an official commendation from the Joint Chiefs of Staff recognizing her strategic unit's successful dismantling of the foreign intelligence leak network. At the bottom, handwritten in General Vance’s familiar scrawl, were the words: Well done, Colonel—err, General. Your grandfather would have been profoundly proud.
A genuine smile touched the corners of Tessa’s lips. She folded the letter and placed it neatly beside her grandfather’s vintage Parker pen.
Footsteps approached the doorway, soft and rhythmic. Maya, now crawling with unstoppable energy, waddled into the room, her tiny hands clutching a pink stuffed rabbit. She pulled herself up against the mahogany leg of Tessa’s desk, looking up with bright, curious eyes that mirrored Tessa’s own unyielding spirit.

Tessa scooped her daughter up into her arms, burying her face in Maya’s soft curls and breathing in the sweet scent of baby shampoo.
"You and I are going to be just fine, little warrior," Tessa whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
