Chapter 4 - The Secret in the Basement

Evelyn’s phone almost slipped from her hand. The blood drained from her face as the mysterious voice echoed through the speaker.

"What did you just say?" Evelyn demanded, her voice shaking for the first time. "My real mother?"

"Check the hidden vault behind the wine cellar in the mansion basement, Evelyn," the mysterious voice whispered before hanging up with a sharp click.

Evelyn’s heart hammered against her ribs. All her life, Eleanor had treated her like an outsider, an illegitimate burden, while doting on Mia. She always thought it was simply toxic favorability—but what if it was something far more sinister?

Without hesitating, Evelyn motioned for her chief security officer, David, a former Special Forces operator. "David, grab a crowbar and follow me to the wine cellar."

They descended deep into the damp, dark basement beneath the grand mansion. The air smelled of aged oak, mold, and decades-old secrets. Evelyn walked past rows of expensive vintage wines until she reached the back stone wall.

David inspected the masonry, using a thermal scanner. "Boss, there’s a hollow space behind this rack. Look at these floor scuffs—someone pushed this wall panel recently."

David jammed the crowbar into the crevice and levered it with immense force. With a loud, grinding crunch, the hidden stone door popped open, revealing a dark, dusty stairwell leading even further underground.

Evelyn pulled out her flashlight and descended into the darkness.

At the bottom of the stairs was a small, windowless room containing only a metal desk, an old steel filing cabinet, and a massive antique iron safe.

"Break it open," Evelyn ordered.

David used a heavy portable drill and a torch. Within fifteen minutes, the heavy steel safe clicked and swung open. Inside was a thick, yellowed leather binder labeled: PROJECT DAWN - 1999.

Evelyn opened the binder with trembling hands.

Inside were medical records, DNA test results, and a handwritten contract signed by Eleanor and Richard Vance, along with a woman named Victoria Rhodes.

Evelyn read the documents in total shock:

Fact 1: Eleanor Vance was medically incapable of having children.

Fact 2: Victoria Rhodes—a brilliant scientist and co-founder of the original Vance Tech—was Evelyn’s biological mother.

Fact 3: Twenty-five years ago, Victoria Rhodes mysteriously "disappeared" in a tragic boating accident... just three days after signing over all her company shares to Richard and Eleanor Vance!

Attached to the back of the folder was a faded photograph of a young woman who looked identical to Evelyn, holding a newborn baby girl. On the back of the photo was a desperate, bloody handwritten note:

"If Eleanor and Richard find out I hid the master key to the biomedical patents, they will kill me. Evelyn, my sweet baby, if you are reading this... I did not abandon you. They took you."

Evelyn fell against the desk, tears burning her eyes as years of emotional trauma suddenly made horrifying sense. She wasn't just an unloved daughter—she was the child of a woman her "parents" had destroyed and robbed!

Suddenly, David’s walkie-talkie buzzed with panic.

"Boss! We have a breach at the gate!" a security guard yelled over the comms. "It’s a team of armed men in unmarked vans! They’re crashing through the main entrance!"

Before Evelyn could react, the lights in the basement flickered and went pitch black.
