Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Shadows

Evelyn pulled back in suspicion, her instincts screaming. "Who are you?! Did Eleanor send you?!"

The old woman pulled off her worn knit cap, revealing long, silver-white hair and a deep scar running along her hairline down to her neck. She reached inside her ragged coat and pulled out a small, faded silver locket.

She opened the locket and held it up to Evelyn’s face.

Inside was a picture of the exact same young woman from the file—Victoria Rhodes—holding a newborn baby. But what made Evelyn’s heart stop was the tiny inscription inside the metal casing:

To my beloved daughter, Evelyn. My light in the dark.

"Mother...?" Evelyn choked out, her voice breaking in disbelief. "No... no, you died 25 years ago in a boating accident!"

"It was no accident, my sweet girl," Victoria sobbed, pulling Evelyn into a tight, desperate embrace. "Richard poisoned the boat's steering mechanism. I barely survived the crash, but when I washed ashore, I was in a coma for six months. By the time I woke up, Eleanor had forged my signature, stolen my patents, and adopted you as her own daughter to control my multi-billion dollar fortune!"

Evelyn sobbed uncontrollably into her mother’s arms, the heavy wall of pain and isolation she had built around her heart shattering into a thousand pieces.

"Why didn't you come for me?" Evelyn cried. "I was so alone, Mom! They treated me like a slave!"

"I tried!" Victoria wept, holding Evelyn’s face in her hands. "Every time I tried to get close to you, Eleanor’s hired thugs threatened to murder you. Eleanor told me if I ever revealed myself, she would make sure you suffered an 'unfortunate accident.' I had to live like a ghost in the slums for twenty-five years just to keep you alive from afar!"

Victoria looked at the yellowed binder tucked in Evelyn’s coat.

"They think they’ve won, Evelyn. Right now, Eleanor and Richard are calling an emergency global press conference at the Vance Tower," Victoria said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, lethal intensity. "They are announcing that you died in a car crash last night, and they are claiming full control of Phoenix Holdings and all your tech patents as your 'grieving parents'."

Evelyn slowly wiped the tears from her face. The weakness, the fear, the pain—it all melted away, replaced by a cold, burning rage stronger than anything she had ever felt.

"They think I'm dead?" Evelyn asked, a dangerous smile spreading across her lips.

"Yes," Victoria replied.

Evelyn stood up, stepping out of the dirty blanket. "Good. Then let's go give them a ghost story they will never forget."
