Chapter 6 - The Homeless Royal

The SUV lay upside down, smoke pouring from its crushed engine.
Evelyn woke up, coughing violently, the metallic taste of blood in her mouth. Her left arm was bruised, but her seatbelt had saved her life.
"David..." she whispered, looking over.
David was unconscious, his head bleeding heavily against the deployed airbag.
In the distance, Evelyn saw flashlights cutting through the dark woods, descending down the hill toward the wreckage. Heavy footsteps were crunching through the wet leaves.
"Check the wreck! Find the drive and the binder! Shoot to kill!" a harsh voice commanded.
Evelyn knew she couldn't pull David out alone without being caught. She grabbed the yellowed binder, jammed it inside her jacket, unbuckled her belt, and crawled out through the shattered rear window into the pitch-black forest, disappearing into the torrential rain.
For three hours, Evelyn ran through the freezing storm, her designer suit torn, covered in mud and blood. The powerful CEO who had ruled the corporate boardroom only twelve hours ago was now fleeing for her life in the middle of nowhere, hunted like animal game.
By sunrise, exhausted and shivering violently from hypothermia, Evelyn stumbled onto the dirty neon-lit streets of the city's poorest slum district—miles away from her luxury life.
She collapsed against the wall of a run-down alleyway behind a soup kitchen, her strength completely gone.
"Hey... miss? Are you okay?" a soft, raspy voice asked.
Evelyn slowly opened her swollen eyes. Standing over her was an elderly homeless woman wrapped in a faded, patched coat, holding a steaming paper cup of hot water.
"I... I have no money..." Evelyn wheezed, her voice barely a whisper. "Please... don't call the police..."
The old woman chuckled softly, sitting down on a wooden crate next to Evelyn and wrapping a dirty wool blanket around Evelyn's trembling shoulders.
"The police don't come down here, child," the woman said kindly, handing her the cup. "Drink this. You look like you've seen the devil."
"I did," Evelyn whispered, tears finally streaming down her face, washing through the dirt on her cheeks. "My own family... they took everything from my mother. They tried to kill me."
The old woman looked at Evelyn's face closely. She reached out a weathered hand and gently pushed back Evelyn's wet hair, staring intensely into her green eyes.
The old woman’s hand began to shake uncontrollably. Her eyes filled with tears.

"Evelyn...?" the old woman gasped, her voice choking with emotion. "Is... is that you?"
Evelyn froze. "How... how do you know my name?"
