Chapter 3 - THE UNRAVELING EMPIRE

The black flash drive sat on the glass coffee table between them like an unexploded bomb. Clara’s eyes were glued to it, her breathing shallow and ragged.

"You think you're so smart, don't you, Alex?" Clara spat suddenly, her polished, elegant facade completely shattering. The delicate socialite vanished, replaced by a woman consumed by cold arrogance. "You think you built this empire on your own genius? You are a puppet!"

"Clara, shut your mouth!" Senator Vance barked, his face flushed red with rising panic.

"No, Father! He's going to find out anyway!" Clara yelled, turning on Alex with a bitter laugh. "You want to know why Julian Park died, Alex? Because he found out that your father didn't die in a car accident twenty years ago! Your father was murdered by my father and your own Board of Directors because he refused to sell the company's defense patents to foreign buyers!"

The room dropped into a dead, suffocating silence.

Alex felt as though the air had been sucked straight out of his lungs. His father’s death—the tragic, rainy night that had defined his entire youth—was a staged execution?

"What did you say?" Alex whispered, taking a menacing step toward Clara.

"Your entire life is a lie, Alex!" Clara sneered, tears of rage glistening in her eyes. "You were kept alive and groomed to be CEO because your father’s will stated that the family assets and patent control could only pass to a blood heir upon his marriage into an approved board family! That's why I agreed to marry you! Once we said 'I do,' the patents would transfer to the Vance trust. And once that happened... you were supposed to suffer a fatal 'heart attack' during our honeymoon!"

Lily gasped from the couch, pulling her phone tighter to her chest.

Alex stood completely still. The horror of the revelation hit him in waves. The love, the years of partnership, the grand gala—it was all an elaborate, long-term abattoir built specifically to butcher him and strip his family of their legacy.

"You monsters," Alex rasped.

"We are businessmen, Alex!" Senator Vance sneered, dropping all pretense of innocence. He reached into his tailored suit jacket. "And business requires eliminating liabilities."

Before anyone could react, Senator Vance pulled a compact, silenced pistol from his coat and aimed it straight at Alex’s chest.

"Father, no! Not here!" Clara screamed.

"Silence!" Vance snapped. "The lockdown is already active! We kill him, kill the maid, stage it as a tragic murder-suicide driven by a disgruntled employee, and clear the room before police arrive! My operatives control the perimeter guards!"

Vance raised the gun, his finger tightening on the trigger.

BANG!

A deafening shot echoed through the room. But it wasn't Alex who fell.

Senator Vance staggered back, a look of utter shock on his face as a red stain bloomed across his crisp white shirt. The gun slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor. Behind him, the double doors were kicked open, revealing a squad of tactical officers dressed in black combat gear, guns raised.

At the head of the squad stood a man in a sharp grey suit—Alex’s long-time chief legal counsel, Marcus Sterling.

"Drop your weapons!" Marcus commanded as officers flooded the room, instantly tackling Senator Vance to the floor and forcing Clara onto her knees in handcuffs.

Alex stared in disbelief. "Marcus? How did you..."

Marcus gave a grim smile, holding up an earpiece. "You tapped your phone during the confrontation downstairs, Alex. The police tactical unit was already staged outside. We heard every single word."
