Chapter 4 - THE SECRET IN THE VAULT

The arrest of Senator Vance and Clara sent shockwaves through the global news cycle. Headlines flooded social media feeds across the world: "BILLIONAIRE GALA POISONING PLOT EXPOSED," "POLITICAL DYNASTY CRUMBLES IN BLOODSHED," and "HERO SERVER SAVES CEO FROM ATTEMPTED EXECUTION."
By 3:00 AM, the mansion was cleared of guests and crawling with federal investigators. Clara and her father were dragged away in federal custody, screaming threats at the cameras flashing outside the estate gates.
In the quiet sanctuary of Alex’s private office, only Alex, Lily, and Marcus remained.
"We have enough to put Vance away for conspiracy to commit murder, financial fraud, and treason," Marcus explained, tossing a thick dossier onto the desk. "But Clara’s lawyers are already filing motions. They’re claiming Vance acted alone and that Clara was an innocent bystander coerced by her father."
"She wasn't innocent," Lily said firmly, her hand tightly bandaged. "She was the one who bought the synthetic neurotoxin. I traced the crypto-wallet address linked to the black-market purchase through my brother's old files. Clara signed off on the transfer herself."
Alex looked at Lily with newfound admiration. "You really are Julian’s sister. You're brilliant."
Lily blushed slightly, looking down. "Julian taught me everything he knew about data forensic tracking. He knew if anything happened to him, I would need to finish what he started."
"And what did he start, Lily?" Alex asked, leaning forward. "Clara mentioned my father’s patents. What were they really working on?"
Lily reached into her pocket and pulled out a heavy, antique brass key attached to a worn leather strap—a key she had kept hidden inside her shoe during the entire gala.
"Julian left this for me in a safety deposit box," Lily said. "He told me it belonged to your father, Arthur Vance. He said your father didn't trust digital servers. He kept a physical vault buried beneath the old family estate in the countryside. The true legacy—and the real identity of the mastermind behind your family's destruction—is inside that vault."
Alex stared at the key. The old countryside estate had been abandoned for fifteen years, locked away under court order following his father's death.
"Then we go there tonight," Alex said, rising to his feet.
"Alex, wait," Marcus cautioned, placing a hand on his shoulder. "The Vance network runs deep. The Senator was just a puppet for someone much bigger on the international board. If you go to that estate now, you are walking directly into a trap."
"I've been living in a trap my entire life, Marcus," Alex replied, his eyes burning with absolute determination. "It's time I turned the tables."

He turned to Lily. "Will you come with me?"
Lily met his gaze without hesitation. "I'm not stopping until my brother gets justice."
