Chapter 5 - THE GRAVEYARD OF SECRETS

An hour later, a heavy black SUV cut through the thick fog rolling across the desolate hills of the countryside. Rain lashed against the windshield as Alex drove, with Lily sitting in the passenger seat navigating through the dark, winding roads.
They arrived at the iron gates of the abandoned estate—a looming, Gothic mansion surrounded by dead trees and rusted fences. It looked like a tomb, forgotten by time.
Alex forced the gates open with his vehicle, the metal screeching in protest. They parked near the side entrance and stepped out into the pouring rain, using heavy-duty flashlights to cut through the darkness.
Inside, the air was cold and smelled of damp earth and decayed wood. Cobwebs hung like tattered curtains from the high ceilings. Guided by the blueprints Julian had left in his notes, Lily led Alex down into the sub-basement, past rows of dusty wine cellars, until they reached a solid iron door embedded directly into the bedrock foundation.
In the center of the iron door was a intricate brass keyhole.
Alex inserted the key. He turned it slowly. A heavy, metallic clunk echoed through the subterranean chamber, and the massive iron door creaked open, revealing a hidden, climate-controlled vault.
Inside, the lights flickered to life automatically via an ancient backup generator.
The room was filled with row upon row of physical filing cabinets, prototype hard drives, and blueprint rolls. But in the center of the room sat a single, sleek desk with a digital monitor and a locked steel briefcase.
Alex stepped forward and lifted the briefcase. Next to it was a photograph—a picture of his father, Arthur, standing arm-in-arm with a young man who looked shockingly familiar.
Alex gasped, dropping the photo frame.
The young man in the photograph with his father wasn't Senator Vance, nor was it any board member Alex recognized.
It was Marcus Sterling—his loyal, trusted corporate lawyer.
Before Alex could speak, the sound of slow, rhythmic clapping echoed from the doorway of the vault.
Alex and Lily spun around. Standing at the entrance, bathed in the dim light of the corridor, was Marcus Sterling. He was holding a silent pistol, a cold, mocking smile playing on his lips.
"I must admit, Alex," Marcus said smoothly, stepping into the vault. "You made this far easier than I anticipated. Bringing the key directly to me saved my team weeks of searching."

"Marcus..." Alex stammered, his mind racing. "You... you were in that photo with my father. Who are you?"
Marcus laughed—a dry, sinister sound. "I'm not just your lawyer, Alex. I am your half-brother."
