Chapter 1 - The Cold Descent

The silence in the grand ballroom of the Falcone estate did not just fall; it solidified like concrete.

Lucas Falcone did not rush down the sweeping marble staircase. A man of his position never rushed. Each step he took was deliberate, heavy, and echoed with the terrifying weight of absolute authority. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that seemed to absorb the light from the crystal chandeliers overhead. His dark eyes were fixed not on his beautiful, smiling fiancée, but on the weeping woman holding her stomach in the center of the floor.

Bianca Rossi’s smile faltered, but only for a fraction of a second. She quickly smoothed her silk gown, dropping the severed lock of Nadia’s hair onto the polished floor as if discarding a piece of trash.

"Lucas, darling," Bianca purred, stepping forward to meet him at the base of the stairs, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "You’re just in time. I was just teaching one of the domestic staff a lesson in presentation. She was standing right in the middle of our guests, looking absolutely disgraceful. I did her a favor, really."

Lucas did not look at Bianca. He walked past her as if she were made of glass.

The forty guests, representing the most ruthless factions of the Providence underworld, held their breath. They watched the Don of the Falcone family stop exactly two inches from Nadia Petrova.

Nadia kept her head bowed. She could smell his cologne—expensive leather, cedarwood, and the faint, metallic scent of gunpowder that always clung to him. She braced herself. She was a maid. She was the widow of a dead dockworker. In this room, she was nothing.

But then, Lucas did something that made the room gasp.

He reached out, his large, scarred hand surprisingly gentle as he touched the side of her face. His thumb brushed over the jagged, ruined patch of her hair where Bianca’s scissors had sliced too close to her temple. His eyes darkened to a shade of pitch black that signaled a violent storm.

"Who did this?" Lucas asked. His voice was low, a quiet rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.

"Lucas, please," Bianca scoffed, laughing nervously. "It’s just a maid. She’s pregnant, unwed, and dragging down the reputation of this house. I was simply—"

"I asked a question," Lucas interrupted, his voice dropping another octave. He did not raise his tone, but the sheer coldness of it made several men in the back row instinctively reach for their jackets. He turned his gaze to Gino Verlain, his head of security standing near the kitchen. "Gino. Who did this?"

Gino stood straight, his face pale. "Miss Rossi, boss. She used the ribbon scissors from the parlor."

Lucas turned slowly to face his fiancée. Bianca Rossi was the daughter of the city’s second most powerful crime family. Their upcoming marriage was supposed to cement a multi-million-dollar alliance. She believed she was untouchable.

"She is a servant, Lucas!" Bianca hissed, her irritation finally breaking through her polished facade. "Why are you making a scene over a girl who scrubs your toilets? Look at her! She’s pathetic. She won't even say who the father of that bastard child is!"

Lucas stepped toward Bianca. The space between them vanished. The aura of absolute menace radiating from him was so intense that Bianca actually took a step back, her high heel catching on the edge of a rug.

"That 'bastard child,'" Lucas said, every word dripping with lethal precision, "is a Falcone."

A collective, sharp intake of breath echoed through the ballroom.

Bianca’s face drained of all color. "What... what did you say?"

"Nadia Petrova is not just a maid in this house," Lucas announced, his voice carrying to every corner of the room, ensuring every guest heard it clearly. "She is the widow of Tomas Falcone. My brother."
