CHAPTER 2 — "The Name That Never Existed"

Emily couldn't stop thinking about the little girl's whisper.

"That's not my daddy's real name."

Richard had heard it too.

She knew because his face had lost all color.

The man who had mocked her for months suddenly looked like someone watching his entire world crack beneath his feet.

When court resumed, Richard avoided eye contact for the first time in twelve years.

His attorney continued presenting financial records, but Richard kept glancing toward the courtroom entrance.

As if expecting someone.

Or fearing someone.

Emily quietly scribbled one sentence on a legal pad and slid it toward her lawyer.

"Find the little girl."

Her attorney frowned.

"Who?"

"I'll explain later."

Meanwhile...

Richard secretly texted someone beneath the table.

Emily caught only three words before the screen went dark.

Find Olivia. Now.

Minutes later...

The judge requested a short recess while reviewing the financial exhibits.

Emily didn't waste a second.

She rushed into the hallway searching every corner until she spotted the woman from earlier sitting beside the little girl.

The woman's eyes widened.

"We can't talk."

Emily knelt beside Olivia.

"Sweetheart... what did you mean?"

The child looked at her mother.

Tears filled the woman's eyes.

Finally she whispered...

"The man you know as Richard Carter..."

"...isn't Richard Carter."

Emily felt cold.

"What?"

"My daughter's father changed his identity fifteen years ago."

Emily stared in disbelief.

The woman continued.

"He wasn't escaping debt."

"He was escaping a criminal investigation."

Emily's breathing stopped.

"What investigation?"

The woman reached into her purse.

Inside was an old newspaper clipping.

Across the front page...

A younger man stared into the camera.

Different hairstyle.

No beard.

But unmistakably the same eyes.

The headline read:

"Investment Broker Vanishes After $48 Million Pension Fraud."

Below the photo...

A different name.

Michael Reeves.

Emily nearly dropped the paper.

"No..."

The woman nodded.

"I didn't know either."

"He told me everyone was lying."

"But last month..."

"I found his old passport."

Olivia quietly added,

"He burns papers every night."

The mother handed Emily a small flash drive.

"I copied everything before he found out."

"Bank transfers."

"Fake passports."

"New identities."

"Everything."

Emily's hands shook.

"This could destroy him."

The woman looked toward the courtroom.

"It already has."

Suddenly...

A courthouse security officer approached.

"Ma'am."

"Mr. Carter is asking if anyone has spoken to you."

The woman immediately stood.

"We have to leave."

She squeezed Emily's hand.

"Whatever you do..."

"Don't give him that drive."

Then they disappeared into the crowd.

Emily slipped the flash drive inside her jacket just as Richard stepped into the hallway.

He smiled.

But his eyes were filled with panic.

"Everything okay, Emily?"

For the first time in years...

She smiled back.

"Better than okay."

Richard noticed the edge of the flash drive peeking from her pocket.

His expression changed instantly.

That smile vanished.

Because he knew...

May you like

The woman he had spent twelve years controlling...

Now held the one secret capable of sending him to prison forever.
