CHAPTER 7 — The Last Witness Walked Into the Courtroom

The courthouse had never been so crowded.

Television cameras lined the hallway.

Federal agents stood at every entrance.

Everyone believed the case was over.

Then the prosecutor made one unexpected announcement.

"Your Honor... the government has one final witness."

The courtroom doors slowly opened.

A frail elderly man entered, leaning on a wooden cane.

Richard's face instantly turned white.

"No..."

The old man looked directly at him.

"You've been hiding long enough... Michael."

Whispers spread through the courtroom.

The prosecutor smiled.

"Please state your name."

"My name is Thomas Reeves."

Richard jumped to his feet.

"He's dead!"

Thomas slowly shook his head.

"No."

"You only told everyone I was."

Emily stared in disbelief.

Richard had spent years claiming both his parents had died in a car accident.

It had all been another lie.

Thomas opened an old leather folder.

Inside were handwritten journals, original birth certificates, family photographs, and letters dating back more than twenty years.

"My son didn't become Michael Reeves overnight."

"He became a criminal one lie at a time."

Then Thomas revealed the darkest secret of all.

Richard hadn't stolen millions alone.

His first victim...

Had been his own father.

He had forged Thomas's signature, emptied every retirement account, and abandoned him in a nursing home under a fake name.

Thomas looked at the jury with tears in his eyes.

"I came here today..."

"...because no father should die carrying his son's lies."

Richard lowered his head.

May you like

For the first time in his life...

He had nowhere left to hide.
