CHAPTER 8 — The Woman Who Was Never Dead

As prosecutors prepared to rest their case, another interruption echoed through the courtroom.
"Your Honor!"
Every head turned.
A woman walked through the doors surrounded by federal marshals.
Richard stumbled backward.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Emily looked closer.
The woman was pale.
Thin.
A scar stretched across her forehead.
She looked at Richard without fear.
"My name is Sarah Lawson."
The room fell silent.
The prosecutor spoke softly.
"Please tell the court who you are."
Sarah answered without hesitation.
"I was Michael Reeves' first wife."
Gasps erupted.
Richard had always claimed Emily was his first and only wife.
Sarah continued.
"Fifteen years ago, Michael stole forty-eight million dollars."
"When investigators closed in..."
"He pushed my car into a river."
"Everyone believed I died."
Emily's heart pounded.
"You survived?"
Sarah nodded.
"A fisherman rescued me."
"But Michael found me in the hospital."
"He said if I ever came back..."
"He'd kill me."
So she disappeared.
Changed her identity.
Lived in fear for fifteen years.
Until Olivia's testimony appeared on national television.
"I realized someone had finally survived him."
Sarah slowly walked toward Emily.
She reached into her purse and handed Emily a faded photograph.
It showed Richard.
Sarah.
And a tiny baby boy.
Emily frowned.
"Who is the child?"
Sarah whispered...
"Our son."
Richard collapsed into his chair.
He had spent fifteen years pretending his child had never existed.
But the biggest surprise was still waiting.
The prosecutor smiled.
"The court should know..."
May you like
"That young man is alive."
"And he's outside this courtroom."
