CHAPTER 1 — The Birthday That Became a Funeral

The silence inside the Drake Hotel lasted exactly four seconds.

Four seconds.

That was all it took for the most feared man in Chicago to realize he had just lost control of the room.

Not because his wife had screamed.

Not because she had slapped him.

Because she had smiled.

Roman Castellano had spent fifteen years building an empire where fear answered before loyalty. Politicians waited outside his office. Judges avoided eye contact. Rivals disappeared before sunrise.

Yet now...

Three hundred guests stared at Evelyn instead of him.

She had stolen the only thing Roman could never tolerate.

Attention.

Vanessa looked down at the sapphire ring resting in her trembling hand.

"I... I don't think I should—"

Roman snatched her wrist.

"You'll wear it."

His voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

Vanessa obeyed.

The blue sapphire slipped onto her finger.

Too loose.

It nearly fell.

Several elderly women from Chicago's old Italian families exchanged uneasy glances.

One whispered just loudly enough to be heard.

"It doesn't fit."

Another answered.

"It never belongs to the wrong woman."

Roman heard them.

His eyes hardened.

"Evelyn."

She turned calmly.

"Yes?"

"You embarrassed me."

"No."

She picked up her untouched champagne.

"I simply refused to embarrass myself."

A few people lowered their heads to hide unexpected smiles.

Roman noticed.

His humiliation deepened.

He stepped closer until only inches separated them.

"You think this changes anything?"

Evelyn looked into his eyes for several long seconds.

Then she whispered something only he could hear.

"It changes everything."

For the first time in four years...

Roman felt something he refused to acknowledge.

Unease.

Outside the ballroom...

Snow drifted across Michigan Avenue.

Evelyn walked alone.

No security followed.

No assistants.

No crying.

She removed her high heels and carried them in one hand as she crossed the empty sidewalk.

Only after reaching the river did she finally stop.

She stared into the black water.

Then...

She laughed.

Not loudly.

Softly.

Almost with relief.

A black SUV rolled beside her.

The rear window lowered.

An elderly man sat inside.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

Eyes that had witnessed wars long before Roman Castellano was born.

"Miss Moretti."

She smiled faintly.

"I wondered how long you'd wait."

"You made quite an entrance."

"I made quite an exit."

He nodded approvingly.

"The Board watched."

She climbed inside.

"They saw everything?"

"They saw exactly what they hoped."

Evelyn leaned back.

"And Roman?"

The old man looked toward the glittering hotel behind them.

"He still believes he owns the empire."

A pause.

"He has no idea whose empire it truly is."

Across town...

Roman slammed the ballroom doors behind him.

Crystal shattered against marble.

Vanessa flinched.

"What did I do?"

He rounded on her.

"You accepted the ring."

"You told me to!"

"I didn't tell you to let her give it to you!"

His breathing grew heavier.

The old family traditions suddenly echoed in his memory.

His grandfather's voice.

"The wife who removes the Castellano ring willingly is no longer our prisoner..."

"She becomes our judge."

Roman had laughed at those stories.

Ancient superstitions.

Meaningless rituals.

Now...

He wasn't laughing.

Because every surviving elder of the organization had witnessed Evelyn handing over that ring voluntarily.

And tradition...

Still mattered.

Far more than Roman wanted to admit.

That night, sixteen encrypted phone calls were exchanged between the oldest members of the Castellano organization.

Roman wasn't invited to any of them.

He never even knew they happened.

But Evelyn did.

May you like

Because every one of those calls ended with the same sentence.

"It's time."
