CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Her Father Took to the Grave

Three days later...
Roman arrived at headquarters expecting another ordinary morning.
Instead...
Every senior captain was already seated around the conference table.
Nobody stood when he entered.
Nobody greeted him.
Silence.
Heavy.
Cold.
"What is this?" Roman demanded.
Eighty-two-year-old Matteo Bianchi slowly folded his newspaper.
"The annual succession review."
Roman frowned.
"We already held it last year."
"We're holding another one."
Roman laughed.
"No one calls succession reviews except me."
Matteo smiled.
"Not anymore."
Roman's smile disappeared.
The doors opened.
Evelyn entered.
No expensive gown.
No jewelry.
Just a black pantsuit and her father's old wristwatch.
Every elder rose to their feet.
Every single one.
Roman remained seated.
Confused.
Then angry.
"What game is this?"
Matteo placed a weathered leather folder onto the table.
"I've protected this for twenty-four years."
Roman reached for it.
Matteo stopped him.
"It's hers."
Evelyn opened the folder.
Inside...
A birth certificate.
A notarized trust.
Several sealed letters.
And one faded photograph.
Roman stared.
His blood turned cold.
The photograph showed Evelyn as an infant.
Standing beside his grandfather.
Not visiting.
Living there.
"What is this?"
Matteo answered.
"The truth."
Roman looked at Evelyn.
"No."
She met his eyes calmly.
"My father wasn't merely your father's accountant."
She slid the birth certificate toward him.
"My mother..."
"...was your grandfather's only daughter."
Silence exploded across the room.
Roman blinked.
Once.
Twice.
"No..."
Matteo nodded.
"Your grandfather had two children."
"One acknowledged."
"One hidden."
Roman whispered,
"Impossible..."
"It was hidden because a civil war would have destroyed the family."
Evelyn continued.
"When my mother died, I was raised under another surname."
"My father swore to protect me."
"Until I was old enough."
Roman's breathing became uneven.
"That would make you..."
"The eldest living blood heir."
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew what that meant.
Roman had married Evelyn believing she was an orphan he could control.
Instead...
He had unknowingly married the only person whose bloodline ranked above his own.
Everything.
Every order.
Every signature.
Every title.
Had technically belonged to her all along.
Roman stood so violently his chair crashed backward.
"I built this empire!"
Evelyn looked almost sympathetic.
May you like
"You managed it."
"You never owned it."
