CHAPTER 3 — The Queen Nobody Saw Coming

News spread before sunset.

Not through newspapers.

Not online.

Through whispers.

The oldest language of organized power.

Roman Castellano had challenged bloodline.

And bloodline had answered.

By evening...

Nearly half his captains had disappeared.

Not dead.

Simply...

Gone.

Each had quietly sworn loyalty elsewhere.

Roman stormed through his mansion searching for allies.

Empty offices.

Empty garages.

Empty loyalty.

Only Vanessa remained.

She sat alone in the library.

Still wearing the sapphire ring.

"It won't come off," she whispered.

Roman barely heard her.

His phone rang.

One message.

Unknown sender.

"Look behind you."

He turned.

The front doors opened.

Evelyn walked in.

Not alone.

Every elder entered behind her.

Matteo.

Salvatore.

Gianni.

Marco.

Men Roman had admired since childhood.

None stood beside him.

They stood beside Evelyn.

Roman laughed bitterly.

"So this is revenge?"

"No."

Evelyn shook her head.

"This is inheritance."

He reached toward the pistol beneath his jacket.

Before his fingers touched it...

Twenty bodyguards aimed their weapons at him.

His own bodyguards.

Roman slowly looked around.

Every face was familiar.

Every face had once sworn to die for him.

Now they waited for Evelyn's command.

She stepped forward until only one arm's length separated them.

"You wanted everyone to watch me lose everything."

She smiled.

"So I thought it was only fair..."

"...that everyone watched you lose everything instead."

She removed one final document from a black folder.

Roman's eyes widened.

The original founding charter of the Castellano Organization.

Signed nearly seventy years earlier.

One handwritten clause rested at the bottom.

"Should the blood heir willingly surrender the Castellano wedding ring after public betrayal, all authority shall immediately return to the rightful family line."

Roman whispered,

"You planned this..."

"For years?"

Evelyn's eyes softened.

"No."

"I endured you for years."

"I planned this..."

"...the moment you walked into my birthday holding another woman's hand."

Vanessa slowly removed the sapphire ring.

This time...

It slipped off effortlessly.

She placed it into Evelyn's palm.

"I'm sorry."

Evelyn nodded gently.

"You were never my enemy."

She slid the ring back onto her own finger.

Perfect.

As if it had never left.

Outside, church bells echoed across downtown Chicago.

Inside...

The empire welcomed its first true queen.

Roman lowered his head.

Not because anyone forced him to.

Because for the first time in his life...

May you like

He finally understood the difference between ruling through fear...

...and being born to lead.
