CHAPTER 5 — The Night the Empire Turned Against Its King

The emergency council convened at sunset.

Every surviving captain attended.

No excuses.

No absences.

Roman entered wearing the same confidence that had terrified men for years.

Until he noticed something strange.

Nobody stood.

Not one person.

Even the youngest soldiers remained seated.

Matteo spoke first.

"We have evidence."

Roman laughed.

"Evidence?"

"I'm the one who gives orders."

Matteo nodded toward Evelyn.

"Not anymore."

The lights dimmed.

A projector flickered to life.

The first video appeared.

Roman bribing a federal official.

The second.

Roman ordering the disappearance of an innocent accountant.

The third.

His meeting with Vincent Bellucci the night before.

Every threat.

Every lie.

Every betrayal.

Captured.

Roman's confidence disappeared one frame at a time.

He slowly turned toward Evelyn.

"You've been watching me."

"For years."

She nodded.

"I started the night my father died."

Roman's breathing grew heavier.

"You knew..."

"I suspected."

She answered calmly.

"My father didn't die from a heart attack."

Silence.

"He discovered where the money was going."

Roman looked away.

That tiny movement...

Told everyone the truth.

One elderly captain quietly removed his Castellano pin.

Then another.

Then another.

Until thirty silver pins rested on the conference table.

Every one of them represented loyalty.

Every one had just been withdrawn.

Roman stood alone.

For the first time in fifteen years...

No one stood beside him.

Outside...

News spread through Chicago's criminal underworld like wildfire.

The King had fallen.

Businesses switched allegiance overnight.

Protection payments stopped arriving.

Warehouses changed ownership.

Entire crews repainted their territories before dawn.

Roman's empire wasn't collapsing.

It was evaporating.

Late that evening...

Vanessa arrived unexpectedly at Moretti House.

She carried only one suitcase.

And the sapphire ring.

Evelyn met her personally.

Vanessa held out the velvet box.

"I don't deserve forgiveness."

"I know."

"I didn't know what he really was."

"I know."

Tears filled Vanessa's eyes.

"He killed someone."

Evelyn became still.

"My father."

Vanessa slowly nodded.

"I heard him confess."

The room went silent.

Matteo whispered...

"...Can you prove it?"

May you like

Vanessa reached into her suitcase.

And removed a tiny digital voice recorder.
