CHAPTER 2 — The Ring That Shouldn't Exist

Amanda ran after him without caring about traffic.

Cars honked.

People shouted.

She ignored everything.

"Noah! WAIT!"

The teenager sprinted through crowded alleys until he finally stopped beside an abandoned warehouse.

His little brother stood behind him, terrified.

Amanda caught her breath.

"I'm not trying to hurt you."

She pointed toward the ring.

"Please... tell me where you got it."

Noah looked down.

"My mother gave it to me."

"When?"

"Before she died."

Amanda's knees almost gave out.

"What was her name?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"I was too young."

Amanda gently held out her hand.

"Can I see the ring?"

After a long silence...

He removed it.

Inside the band were four tiny engraved words.

Forever My Little Lion.

Amanda burst into tears.

No one else knew those words.

Not even the jeweler.

She had written them herself the night before her son's fifth birthday.

Her hands shook uncontrollably.

"You didn't steal this..."

Noah quietly shook his head.

"It has always been mine."

Amanda stared into his eyes.

The same gray eyes.

The same tiny scar above his eyebrow.

The scar he'd gotten after falling off his bicycle at age four.

It couldn't be.

Could it?

Just then...

An elderly homeless man watching from across the street suddenly shouted—

"I knew this day would come!"

Amanda turned.

The old man slowly walked closer.

"I was there fifteen years ago."

"I saw the people who took that little boy."

Amanda's blood ran cold.

The old man pointed directly at Noah...

Then looked Amanda straight in the eyes.

"They didn't kidnap one child."

"They kidnapped twins."

Amanda stopped breathing.

Twins?

She had only ever given birth to one son.

Or at least...

May you like

That's what everyone had told her.
