CHAPTER 8 — Emily's Last Secret Changed Everything

The tape recorder clicked.

Silence filled the room.

Adrian's hands trembled.

Emily's voice echoed again.

"Every child I selected was given a new life... except one."

Amanda looked at Detective Harris.

"What does she mean?"

Before anyone could answer, Adrian found another envelope hidden beneath the recorder.

Across the front were three words.

FOR AMANDA ONLY.

Amanda slowly opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The ink had faded with time.

Amanda,

If you're reading this, then everything has already fallen apart.

You deserve the truth.

I never kidnapped Noah.

I saved him.

The Guardians Foundation had already chosen him. They planned to raise him as the future leader of their organization.

I couldn't let that happen.

So I disappeared with him before they could.

Amanda's tears landed on the paper.

She kept reading.

Every terrible thing people blamed on me... I accepted.

Because the real monsters needed someone to hate while they stayed invisible.

Amanda whispered,

"She... protected him?"

Suddenly...

Detective Harris's phone rang.

His face turned pale.

"What?"

He put the call on speaker.

A federal agent spoke rapidly.

"We've identified the chairman of the Guardians Foundation."

Amanda held her breath.

"Who is it?"

The agent answered.

"Judge Benjamin Hale."

The room froze.

Judge Hale had presided over nearly every major case involving missing children for the past twenty-five years.

Every investigation...

Every adoption...

Every appeal...

Had passed through his courtroom.

Amanda realized the horrifying truth.

"He wasn't covering up the crimes..."

"He was directing them."

Just then...

The hospital called.

Noah was awake.

Amanda and Adrian rushed to his room.

Noah looked weak but conscious.

"I remembered something."

Amanda grabbed his hand.

"What is it?"

"When Emily took me away... she wasn't alone."

"There was another woman."

Amanda frowned.

"Who?"

Noah closed his eyes.

"I never saw her face."

"But she wore a necklace."

"What kind of necklace?"

Noah whispered,

"A silver locket..."

"With a family picture inside."

Amanda's heart skipped.

She reached beneath her own shirt.

Hanging around her neck...

Was the exact same silver locket.

She opened it.

Inside were two tiny photographs.

One of herself.

One of the baby she believed was Noah.

But now...

There was something she had never noticed.

A hidden compartment.

Inside lay a folded piece of paper no larger than a postage stamp.

Amanda unfolded it carefully.

Only one sentence was written.

If you ever find this... trust no one wearing the Carter name.

Adrian slowly stepped backward.

"My name..."

Amanda looked into his eyes.

"No."

"You may carry their name..."

"...but you never carried their darkness."

At that moment, every television in the hospital switched on automatically.

Judge Benjamin Hale appeared on every screen.

He wasn't under arrest.

He was standing behind a podium at a nationally televised press conference.

He smiled calmly into the cameras.

Then he looked directly into the lens and said:

"Amanda Carter... thank you for finding all of my loose ends."

The reporters looked confused.

Then Hale continued with a chilling smile.

"Now it's time for the entire country to learn who the real criminal is."

Behind him, giant screens lit up with hundreds of classified documents.

At the very top was Amanda's photograph.

Beneath it, in bold red letters:

MOST WANTED: THE WOMAN WHO STOLE AMERICA'S CHILDREN

Amanda stared at the screen in disbelief.

Someone had rewritten history.

And overnight...

May you like

The victim had become the nation's most wanted fugitive.
