CHAPTER 5 — The Son She Never Knew Became the Man Hunting Them

Amanda couldn't breathe.
The man standing at the top of the staircase looked just like Noah.
The same gray eyes.
The same sharp jawline.
The same scar above his eyebrow...
Except this scar had been made intentionally.
Like someone wanted him to remember pain forever.
He slowly walked down the stairs, smiling.
"My name is Adrian."
Amanda whispered through tears.
"My son..."
Adrian stopped several feet away.
"No."
"You lost the right to call me that thirty years ago."
Amanda's heart shattered.
"I never abandoned you!"
"I searched every day!"
Adrian laughed—a cold, empty laugh.
"So did I."
He tossed a thick file onto the floor.
Thousands of newspaper clippings spilled across the hallway.
Every missing-person report.
Every interview Amanda had ever given.
Every birthday she had celebrated alone.
"I watched you search."
"I watched you cry."
"I watched you beg the world to help find your son."
Amanda looked up in confusion.
"You knew?"
"I've known who you were since I turned eighteen."
Silence filled the room.
"So... why didn't you come home?"
Adrian's eyes darkened.
"Because home was the place that sold me."
Detective Harris quietly entered behind Amanda with a small tactical team.
They froze.
More than fifty children stood silently around the orphanage.
None of them looked frightened.
They looked... loyal.
Each child wore the same silver ring.
Adrian noticed Amanda staring.
"They're not prisoners."
"They're survivors."
He gestured around the room.
"Every one of them was stolen."
"Every one of them was sold."
"And every government agency failed them."
Amanda slowly realized the horrifying truth.
Adrian hadn't built a criminal organization.
He had built a family.
Then Noah suddenly walked out from another room.
He wasn't tied up.
He wasn't hurt.
Amanda rushed toward him.
"Noah!"
He raised his hand.
"Mom... wait."
Amanda stopped.
Noah looked at Adrian.
"I stayed because I wanted answers."
Adrian nodded.
Then he handed Noah another folder.
Inside was a DNA report.
Amanda's blood froze.
The results read:
Amanda Carter — Biological Mother: 99.9999%
Noah Carter — Biological Son
Adrian Carter — Biological Son
Then came the third page.
Amanda's hands began shaking violently.
There was another name.
Elias Carter.
Status:
Alive.
Last known location:
Unknown.
Amanda stared at Adrian.
"Elias..."
"Our youngest brother," Adrian answered quietly.
"The only one who escaped everyone."
Noah frowned.
"So where is he?"
Adrian's smile disappeared.
"He isn't hiding from us."
"He's hiding from the people who created this."
Amanda whispered,
"What people?"
Adrian slowly reached into his coat.
He placed an old photograph on the table.
It showed Richard Carter...
Margaret Carter...
Three powerful politicians...
A billionaire banker...
And a smiling judge.
Standing beneath a gold plaque that read:
THE GUARDIANS FOUNDATION
Adrian looked Amanda directly in the eyes.
"My grandmother wasn't the mastermind."
"She worked for them."
"The people who stole us..."
"They're still running the country."
Before anyone could speak...
Every light inside the orphanage suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the building.
A laser dot appeared on Adrian's chest.
Then another...
On Noah.
On Amanda.
A calm voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"You should have stayed buried."
A single gunshot exploded through the silence.
Amanda screamed as Adrian shoved her to the floor.
The bullet missed her by inches...
But struck someone else.
Noah collapsed into Amanda's arms.
Blood spread across his white shirt.
As Amanda cried uncontrollably, Noah grabbed her hand with his last strength and whispered five words that changed everything:
May you like
"Elias... was never our brother."
