CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The wedding had completely stopped.
Guests no longer cared about flowers.
Or champagne.
Or the bride.
Every eye remained fixed on Clara.
Julian carefully opened the oldest envelope.
Inside...
A handwritten letter.
His hands trembled as he read.
"Julian...
I don't know if you'll ever read this.
Today the doctor found three tiny heartbeats.
You're going to be a father.
I'm terrified... but I've never been happier.
Please don't let your mother decide our future.
Please come find us.
We'll be waiting."
The date.
Four years earlier.
Long before the engagement with Brooke.
Long before Clara disappeared forever.
Julian looked up.
His eyes were already filled with tears.
"I never received this."
Clara nodded sadly.
"I know."
He opened the second letter.
Photographs slipped onto the marble floor.
Three newborn babies sleeping together.
Tiny hospital bracelets.
Three birth certificates.
Father's name...
Blank.
Julian fell to one knee.
His breathing became ragged.
Emma quietly walked toward him.
Clara didn't stop her.
The little girl tilted her head.
"Are you crying?"
Julian couldn't answer.
Emma reached into her pocket and pulled out a tiny tissue.
"My mommy says tissues help."
She gently wiped one tear from his cheek.
The entire room watched in complete silence.
Even the photographers forgot to take pictures.
Julian whispered,
"Thank you."
Emma smiled.
"My grandpa cries when he watches sad movies too."
Grandpa.
Not Daddy.
The word shattered what remained of Julian's heart.
He looked up at Clara.
"You raised them alone."
"Yes."
"For four years?"
"Yes."
"Without asking me for anything?"
Clara smiled faintly.
"I asked once."
"You never came."
Julian shook his head desperately.
"I didn't know."
"I swear to you..."
"I didn't know."
Then a calm voice echoed from the back of the ceremony.
"Because someone made sure he never would."
Every guest turned.
An elderly man in a dark gray suit walked slowly down the aisle.
Dr. Samuel Reeves.
Still carrying the same worn leather briefcase from years ago.
Vivian's face lost all color.
"No..."
The doctor stopped beside Julian.
"I've spent four years waiting for the right moment."
He placed a sealed folder into Julian's hands.
"The original fertility report."
Julian frowned.
"This isn't the report I received."
"It wasn't supposed to be."
The doctor looked directly at Vivian.
"Because your mother paid someone to replace it."
The room exploded with gasps.
Brooke stepped backward in disbelief.
"What?"
Dr. Reeves continued.
"Julian was never infertile."
"He had a temporary condition that was treatable."
"The altered report declared him almost incapable of fathering children."
Julian stared at his mother.
"You..."
"...lied to me?"
Vivian finally spoke.
"I protected this family."
"You destroyed it!" Julian shouted.
The guests fell silent again.
Dr. Reeves slowly removed a small flash drive from his pocket.
"I also brought something else."
"A recording."
Vivian's hands began shaking uncontrollably.
"No..."
"Please..."
Dr. Reeves looked at the wedding planner.
"Is there a sound system?"
The planner nodded.
Within seconds...
The flash drive was connected.
Vivian's own voice echoed through the grand ballroom.
"Half a million dollars...
Destroy the original report.
My son will never marry that girl if he believes she can't give him heirs.
No one can ever know."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Brooke slowly removed her engagement ring.
She looked at Julian with tears in her eyes.
Then at Vivian.
Finally she whispered,
"I was never marrying Julian..."
"I was marrying your lie."
She placed the ring on the altar.
Turned around.
And walked away.
No one tried to stop her.
Because at that exact moment...
The wedding had become something far bigger than a broken engagement.
May you like
It had become the public collapse...
Of the Prescott family empire.
