CHAPTER 8 — The Daughter No One Knew Existed

The televisions went black.
Then a live video feed appeared.
A little girl, no older than seven, sat alone in a dimly lit room.
She clutched a small stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.
She wasn't crying.
She simply looked into the camera and whispered,
"Grandma..."
Margaret's face turned white.
She collapsed into Adrian's arms.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Adrian stared at the child.
"Mom... who is she?"
Margaret couldn't answer.
Instead, the mysterious man from the vault appeared on the screen behind the little girl.
He smiled calmly.
"Meet your granddaughter."
Adrian's blood ran cold.
"I don't have a daughter."
The man laughed.
"That's what you were meant to believe."
He tossed a folder onto the table in front of the girl.
Inside were hospital records...
Birth certificates...
DNA test results.
The little girl looked directly into the camera.
"My mommy said my daddy was a famous chef."
"But she died before she could tell me where to find you."
Adrian's hands began to shake uncontrollably.
He opened the digital copies of the DNA report sent to his phone.
Probability of paternity: 99.9999%.
His world collapsed.
Seven years earlier, during the hardest period of his culinary training in Europe, he had briefly fallen in love with a young pastry chef named Elena.
She had disappeared without explanation.
Now Adrian realized she had been carrying his child all along.
The mysterious man smiled one last time.
"You thought this story was about a stolen hotel."
"It never was."
"It was about an inheritance worth ten billion dollars..."
"...and the only living heir has just been found."
The screen went dark.
Then Adrian's phone rang.

An unknown voice whispered only six words before hanging up:
"They're already coming for your daughter."
