Chapter 1 — The River Chose Its Victim

The river did not roar.
It screamed.
What had been a narrow crossing only yesterday had become a violent wall of muddy water after an endless night of tropical rain. Trees leaned dangerously over the swollen banks, their roots exposed by the flood. Branches and broken logs rushed downstream like missiles.
Most tourists stood at a safe distance, taking photographs of the dramatic landscape.
Emily Carter wasn't looking at the scenery.
She heard something.
A desperate cry.
At first she thought it was a bird.
Then she saw it.
A tiny golden shape spinning helplessly through the current.
"Oh my God..." she whispered.
"It's a lion cub!"
The little animal disappeared beneath the water.
Then surfaced again.
Its tiny paws clawed desperately at nothing.
People gasped.
Several lifted their phones.
Someone shouted for the safari guide.
Someone else yelled that the rescue team should be called.
Emily didn't wait.
Years earlier she had volunteered at a wildlife rehabilitation center in Kenya, helping orphaned cheetahs and injured elephants. She knew one thing.
The cub had less than thirty seconds.
She threw off her jacket.
Dropped her backpack.
And jumped.
The freezing water hit her like concrete.
The current immediately dragged her sideways.
She slammed into a submerged rock so hard that pain exploded through her shoulder.
Still she kept swimming.
Every stroke cost her energy.
Every second the cub drifted farther away.
"Come on..."
She reached out.
Missed.
Reached again.
Finally her fingers caught the loose skin behind the cub's neck.
The tiny lion barely moved.
Its eyes were half closed.
Its breathing shallow.
Emily lifted it against her chest while struggling to stay upright.
"It's okay," she whispered.
"I've got you."
The cub made the weakest little sound.
Almost like a kitten.
Then buried its face beneath her chin.
Emily smiled despite the danger.
She turned toward shore.
That was when the forest became silent.
No birds.
No insects.
No wind.
Only the sound of water.
The safari guide suddenly turned pale.
His binoculars slipped from his hands.
"No..."
He whispered.
"No, no..."
Emily followed his terrified stare.
A lioness stood on the riverbank.
Perfectly still.
Golden eyes fixed on the cub.
Another lioness appeared behind her.
Then another.
Grass parted.
A massive black-maned male stepped into the open.
His body looked enormous.
Scars crossed his face.
His amber eyes never blinked.
More lions emerged.
One.
Two.
Three.
Seven.
Nine.
An entire pride.
Every one of them watching Emily.
The tourists backed away in panic.
Some climbed onto the safari vehicle.
Others ran.
Only the guide stayed frozen.
He knew something the others didn't.
"This isn't normal..."
he whispered.
"They're not hunting."
"They're waiting."
Emily felt the cub tremble in her arms.
The giant male slowly entered the water.
Each step sent ripples toward her.
Ten feet.
Eight.
Six.
She couldn't breathe.
If she moved...
She might trigger an attack.
If she stayed...
The river would carry her away.
May you like
Then the lion stopped only a few feet in front of her.
The entire world held its breath.
