Chapter 13 — The Boy Who Walked Out of the Storm

Emily believed she had closed that chapter of her life forever.

She was wrong.

Nearly three years after the death of the old black-maned lion, she returned to the reserve to help train a new generation of wildlife rangers.

The rainy season had arrived early.

Dark clouds rolled across the African sky, and distant thunder echoed over the plains.

Just before sunset, a radio transmission interrupted the training session.

"Control, this is Patrol Four. We've found footprints."

"Human?"

"Yes... small ones."

Emily frowned.

"A child?"

"No adults nearby."

Within minutes, every ranger vehicle headed toward the northern grasslands.

The tracks led through thick mud before disappearing near a dry riverbed.

"Who would let a child wander out here?" one ranger asked.

Daniel shook his head.

"They wouldn't."

"Someone lost him... or someone left him."

As night approached, the searchlights swept across the endless savannah.

Then Emily heard it.

A quiet sob.

She climbed down into the riverbed.

Hidden beneath tangled bushes sat a frightened boy no older than eight.

His clothes were torn.

His shoes were missing.

His hands trembled from exhaustion.

"It's okay," Emily said gently.

"My name is Emily."

The boy looked up with frightened blue eyes but said nothing.

Only after she wrapped him in a blanket did he whisper a single word.

"They're coming."

Emily exchanged a worried glance with Daniel.

"Who?"

The boy slowly pointed toward the dark horizon.

"The men with helicopters."

Silence fell over the search team.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Get him back to camp."

"Now."

None of them noticed several pairs of glowing amber eyes watching quietly from the tall grass.

The lions had returned.
