Chapter 1 - THE WILL OF A DEAD MAN

Hook: She saved the East Coast’s most feared crime boss—then he found her father’s signature on her skin.
“Who are you?”
Adrian Vale’s voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the tense, heavy silence of Bellarosa’s like a scalpel.
Mara kept her hand on his lapel. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her eyes remained steady on his. "Someone who just saved your life," she whispered, her breath brushing his lips. "The shooter on the fourth floor of the Mercer building just packed up. If I hadn't pushed you back, your brains would be on that white tablecloth."
Behind her, the rustle of expensive suits and the unmistakable clack of weapons being drawn grew louder.
"Boss," said a burly man with a scarred jaw, stepping closer. "She crossed the perimeter. She could be the distraction. Let me handle her."
Adrian didn't look at his bodyguard. He kept his gaze locked on Mara, searching her face for fear, deceit, or mercenary intent. He found none of them. Instead, he saw a cold, calculating focus that mirrored his own.
With a slow, deliberate movement of his hand, Adrian signaled his men. "Stand down, Silas."
"But Boss—"
"I said, stand down." The authority in his voice was absolute. Silas stepped back, though his hand remained close to his holster.
Adrian looked down at Mara’s hand, still clutching his lapel. "You have three seconds to tell me how a random woman walking down Mercer Street knew a sniper was aiming at my head before my own security detail did."
"I’m not a random woman," Mara said, finally letting go of his coat. She reached into her leather jacket. Instantly, three guns raised again.
"Don't," Adrian warned, his eyes narrowing.
"It’s just an envelope," Mara said slowly, pulling out a thick, yellowed piece of paper. "My father died three days ago. He left me this. It had today's date, this exact time, and a set of coordinates that led me to the street corner outside this restaurant. He told me if I wanted to live, I had to be on those coordinates, look up at the fourth floor, and do whatever it took to keep the man in the window from firing."
Adrian snatched the envelope from her hand. His cold expression fractured, just for a millisecond, when he saw the wax seal on the back—a stylized raven clutching a key.
"Arthur Bell," Adrian muttered, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Your father was Arthur Bell?"
"You knew him?" Mara asked.
May you like
Adrian didn't answer. Instead, he grabbed her by the wrist, his grip like iron, and pulled her toward the back exit of the restaurant. "We're leaving. Now."
As they moved, Mara caught sight of the woman with the pearls two tables away. She was staring at them, her face pale, frantically typing a message on her phone. Mara realized then that her father hadn't just saved Adrian Vale—he had dragged her straight into a war.
