Chapter 5 - THE SINS OF THE FATHER

Hook: The video in the vault revealed the ultimate betrayal—the monster wasn’t who she thought it was.
Mara and Adrian stepped into the cold vault. On the screen of the tablet, the face of a younger Arthur Bell appeared. He looked tired, but his eyes were sharp.
"If you are watching this, Adrian, it means I am dead, and my daughter Mara has saved your life. You spent ten years hunting me, believing I stole fifty million dollars from your family. But the truth is, I didn't steal it. I hid it from your father."
Adrian frowned, staring at the screen. "My father?"
The recorded voice of Arthur Bell continued: "Your father, Marcus Vale, wasn't a respectable crime lord. He was planning to sell out the entire syndicate to a foreign cartel that dealt in human trafficking and chemical weapons. I couldn't let that happen. I took the money to defund his operation, and I hid the decryption keys so he couldn't access his offshore accounts. But Marcus found out. He threatened to kill my daughter, Mara."
Arthur’s image paused, looking directly into the camera as if staring at Mara across time. "So, I made a deal with the only person who hated Marcus as much as I did. Elena."
Mara gasped, turning to look at Elena, who was still standing under Adrian’s gun.
"Elena wanted the empire for herself. She helped me disappear, and in exchange, I promised to give her the decryption keys when Adrian took over. But I knew she would betray me. I knew she would try to kill Adrian to take full control. Mara... Adrian is not your enemy. He is the shield I built for you. And you are the anchor that will keep him from becoming the monster his father was."
The video cut to black.
The silence in the vault was suffocating.
"So," Elena whispered, a wicked smile spreading across her lips. "The big secret is out. Your father was a traitor to your family, Adrian. And Mara’s father was the puppet master who set this entire game in motion ten years ago. You two are bound by a lie."
Adrian slowly lowered his gun, his face unreadable. He looked at Mara, whose eyes were filled with tears of betrayal and confusion. Her entire life—her father’s training, her paranoia, her flight—had been orchestrated to place her on that specific street corner, to kiss a stranger and save his life, all to resolve a decade-old gang war.
"You knew," Mara whispered to Elena.

"Of course I knew," Elena sneered. "But Arthur got greedy at the end. He refused to give me the vault code. He wanted you to have it, Mara. He wanted to make you the queen of the underworld. But you don't have the stomach for it."
Elena suddenly reached into her coat pocket, not for a gun, but for a small detonator. "If I can't have the empire, no one will. The entire building is rigged. We all go down together."
