Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS IN THE VAULT

Hook: A dead father's final blueprint didn't just save a monster—it made his daughter his boss.

The safehouse was a penthouse in Tribeca, hidden behind reinforced steel doors and state-of-the-art biometric scanners. Adrian threw the yellowed envelope onto a heavy mahogany desk and turned to face Mara.

"Your father was the chief architect of the Syndicate's financial network," Adrian said, pacing the room like a caged panther. "Ten years ago, he vanished with fifty million dollars of our money. We thought he ran. We thought he was a thief."

"My father lived in a dingy two-bedroom apartment in Queens and died of lung cancer because he couldn't afford experimental treatments," Mara snapped, her anger flaring. "He didn't have fifty million dollars. He had a shelf of old books and a terminal diagnosis."

"Then he was hiding it," Adrian countered, stepping into her space. He was towering, smelling of expensive cedarwood and gunpowder. "And he used you as a shield to get to me. Why?"

"Look inside the envelope, Adrian," Mara said.

Adrian sliced the wax seal open with a silver pocket knife. Inside was not a letter, but a high-tech obsidian key card and a single sheet of paper with a handwritten note:

“Adrian. They are coming for you from the inside. The pearls around Elena’s neck hold the transmitter that jammed your security's comms today. I gave you my daughter’s hand to save your life. Now, you must give her your protection. The key card unlocks Vault 808 at the Manhattan Trust. It belongs to Mara now. If she dies, the decryption key for your entire empire’s assets is sent to the FBI.”

Adrian’s breath hitched. He looked from the letter to Mara.

"Elena," Adrian whispered. "The woman at the table. She’s my stepmother. She’s been running the northern territory since my father died."

"And she just tried to have you assassinated," Mara added. "My father knew she would. He timed it down to the second. He knew I’d see the sniper. He trained me to notice things like that."

"Why did he train you to be a target?" Adrian asked, his voice softening slightly, though his eyes remained suspicious.

"He didn't train me to be a target," Mara said, holding her head high. "He trained me to be a survivor. And right now, it looks like you and I are forced to survive together."

Suddenly, the lights in the penthouse flickered and died. The backup red emergency lights hummed to life, casting bloody shadows across the room.

From the hallway, the sound of muffled gunfire echoed.

"They found us," Adrian said, drawing a sleek black semi-automatic pistol from his holster. He tossed a smaller, compact handgun to Mara. "Can you use this?"

Mara caught it effortlessly, checking the chamber with a practiced flick of her wrist. "My dad didn't just teach me how to spot snipers, Adrian. Let's go."
