Chapter 4 - THE VAULT OF BEASTS

Hook: Behind Vault 808 lay the truth—and it wasn’t money. It was a confession.

The Manhattan Trust was closed to the public, but the lights inside the grand marble lobby were blazing. The glass front doors had been shattered, and two dead security guards lay near the reception desk.

"Elena's mercenaries are already inside," Adrian whispered, crouching behind a massive stone pillar near the entrance.

Mara looked at the grand staircase leading down to the underground vaults. "The vault is three floors down. It's heavily armored. Even with explosives, it will take them at least ten minutes to breach the secondary seals."

"Unless they have the override code," Adrian said, checking his magazine. "Which my father might have given Elena before he passed."

"He didn't," Mara said confidently. "My father hated Elena. He told me once that the greed of a pearl-wearing snake would be the downfall of the East Coast. He was talking about her."

They slipped down the stairs, moving like ghosts through the shadows. The sound of heavy drilling and shouting echoed from the subterranean levels.

In the center of the vault room, Elena Vale stood wearing her pristine white coat, her pearls gleaming under the fluorescent lights. A team of four heavily armed mercenaries was drilling into the massive steel door of Vault 808.

"Hurry up!" Elena hissed. "Adrian’s men will be crawling all over this city soon. I want that decryption key, and I want it now!"

"You're too late, Elena," Adrian's voice echoed off the cold concrete walls.

Elena spun around, her mercenaries instantly raising their assault rifles. But Adrian and Mara had already taken high-ground cover behind the safety deposit boxes.

"Adrian," Elena said, her voice dripping with mock sweetness. "You survived. I must fire my recruitment agency. But you're outnumbered, dear. And you brought a little stray with you." She glared at Mara. "The daughter of that rat, Arthur."

"My father wasn't a rat," Mara yelled back. "He was the one who kept this family from tearing itself apart while you crawled your way into the Vale bed!"

"Kill them!" Elena screamed.

A fierce gunfight erupted. The sound of shattered glass and ricocheting bullets filled the vault. Mara moved with deadly agility, flanking the mercenaries and taking out two with precise shots to their leg armor, disabling them. Adrian handled the remaining guards with cold, ruthless efficiency, moving forward like a storm.

Within minutes, the mercenaries were incapacitated, and Elena was left standing alone, her back pressed against the heavy door of Vault 808.

Adrian walked up to her, his gun pointed at her chest. "It's over, Elena."

Elena laughed, a manic, desperate sound. "Is it? Open the vault, Adrian. Go ahead. See what your precious Arthur Bell left behind. See what you've been protecting."

Mara stepped forward and swiped her father's obsidian key card against the vault reader. The heavy gears turned, and with a deep pneumatic hiss, the massive steel door swung open.
