CHAPTER 13 — I THOUGHT THE NIGHTMARE WAS OVER... UNTIL THE MAN EVERYONE BELIEVED WAS DEAD WALKED INTO MY OFFICE

Life finally became quiet.

Daniel Parker had been indicted.

The employee ownership program was thriving.

Parker Freight Solutions had just signed the largest contract in its history.

For the first time in months, I believed my mother's letter had truly marked the end of the battle.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

Late one Friday afternoon, my assistant knocked softly on my office door.

"There's someone here asking for you."

"He refuses to give his name."

"Should I send him away?"

Before I could answer, an elderly man stepped into my office.

The moment I saw his face, my heart stopped.

Every family portrait.

Every newspaper clipping.

Every faded photograph from my childhood...

It was him.

Jonathan Parker.

My grandfather.

The founder of Parker Family Holdings.

The man the entire family believed had died twenty-five years earlier.

I stood frozen.

"That's impossible."

His voice was calm.

"I know exactly how impossible this looks."

He placed a worn leather journal on my desk.

"I never died, Claire."

"I disappeared."

My knees nearly gave out.

He explained that after discovering millions of dollars quietly disappearing from the family empire decades earlier, he realized someone inside the family wanted complete control.

He trusted almost no one.

Not even his own children.

So he staged his death with the help of a federal witness protection task force investigating organized financial crimes connected to several powerful business figures.

Only one person knew the truth.

My mother.

"The day she died," he whispered, "I lost the only person I trusted to protect you."

Then he opened the journal.

Inside were handwritten notes documenting every suspicious transaction, every forged signature, every secret meeting.

The final page contained a sentence that sent chills through my body.

Daniel Parker was never the mastermind.

"He was only the front man," my grandfather said.

"The person who ordered everything..."

"...is still free."
