CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN WHO THOUGHT HE RAN THE COMPANY DISCOVERED HE WAS ONLY BORROWING MY POWER

By 8:30 that morning, Ethan had called me seventeen times.
I answered none of them.
Instead, I watched the security feed from my downtown office.
His frustration slowly transformed into panic.
Employees who had greeted him every morning suddenly refused eye contact.
His assistant avoided him.
IT escorted him away from his office.
Then Human Resources handed him a sealed envelope.
Across town, Linda knew nothing.
She happily invited neighbors over for coffee inside "her son's beautiful house."
She never made it through the front door.
The electronic lock rejected her code.
Again.
And again.
"What nonsense is this?" she shouted.
She called Ethan.
He arrived twenty minutes later carrying his work laptop.
Only to discover...
His house key no longer worked either.
He pounded on the front door.
"Claire!"
The Ring camera activated.
I answered through the speaker.
"Can I help you?"
His voice shook.
"Why can't we get inside?"
"Because neither of you lives there anymore."
Linda exploded.
"You can't kick us out! This is my son's property!"
I smiled.
"No, Linda."
"It never was."
Silence.
I uploaded a single document to the Ring display.
The deed.
Purchased years before my marriage.
Owner:
Claire Parker.
Only Claire Parker.
Linda stared at the screen.
Then looked at Ethan.
Then back again.
"No..."
she whispered.
"She's lying."
Ethan's face slowly lost all color.
Because deep inside...
He knew the signature was real.
He had simply never cared enough to ask questions.
Before either could speak again, a tow truck arrived.
Its driver walked directly toward the company SUV parked in the driveway.
"Corporate recovery order."
Within minutes...
The vehicle disappeared.
Linda screamed loud enough for neighbors to gather outside.
She accused everyone of fraud.
She threatened lawsuits.
She promised her son would fire every person involved.
The tow truck driver smiled politely.
"I don't think he works there anymore."
Those words landed harder than any slap.
Ethan looked completely broken.
But I wasn't finished.
At noon, my attorney officially served divorce papers.
Linda ripped them in half.
The attorney quietly placed another identical copy onto the hood of Ethan's car.
"I brought extras."
Even the neighbors struggled to hide their smiles.
As the black sedan drove away, Ethan finally called the only board member he trusted.
The chairman answered after the third ring.
"Ethan..."
"I need you at tomorrow's emergency meeting."
Relief flooded Ethan's face.
"I knew this was all some misunderstanding."
The chairman paused.
"No."
"It isn't."
Then he hung up.
That night...
Neither Ethan nor Linda slept.
Because for the first time...
They realized they didn't actually know who controlled the company.
May you like
Or why every executive seemed completely loyal...
To me.
