CHAPTER 9 — WHEN I THOUGHT THE STORY WAS OVER... A LETTER CHANGED EVERYTHING

That evening, I returned to my office expecting peace.
Instead, my assistant handed me a sealed envelope.
"No return address."
Inside was a single photograph.
A much younger version of me standing beside Richard Carter.
On the back, someone had written four words.
You still don't know.
Confused, I unfolded another sheet of paper.
It contained only an address.
An abandoned warehouse outside Austin.
Against my better judgment, I went.
The building was empty.
Except for one elderly man waiting inside.
"I've been looking for you for twenty years," he said quietly.
"My name is Samuel Brooks."
The name meant nothing to me.
Until he opened an old leather briefcase.
Inside were original financial records from the earliest days of Parker Freight Solutions.
Then he showed me something I had never seen before.
The first investment that launched my company...
Wasn't anonymous.
It came from a trust established by my late mother.
A trust I had been told never existed.
Samuel looked at me with tired eyes.
"Your mother didn't just leave you enough to start a business."
"She left controlling ownership in three logistics companies."
I stared at the documents in disbelief.
"Why was this hidden from me?"
Samuel sighed.
"Because someone inside your own family spent decades trying to make sure you never found out."
He slid one final folder across the table.
At the top was a familiar name.
Parker Family Holdings.
Below it...
A list of board members.
One name made my heart stop.
My uncle.
The man who had attended my wedding.
The man who had comforted me through my divorce.
The man who had just voted in my favor during the emergency board meeting.
Next to his name was a note written in my mother's handwriting.
Trust no one—not even family.
I slowly closed the folder.
Everything I had fought through with Ethan...
Everything Linda had destroyed...
Everything I believed was the end...
Had only been the beginning.

Because the greatest betrayal of my life hadn't come from my ex-husband.
It was waiting inside my own bloodline.
