CHAPTER 1 — The Fall That Should Have Ended Everything

"You missed."

Those were the last words Adrian Blackwood whispered before his wheelchair rolled backward into the darkness.

Sophia Blackwood watched without blinking.

The cliff overlooking Black Raven Point swallowed both the man and his custom titanium wheelchair in complete silence.

No scream.

No splash.

Only the wind.

Then nothing.

She slowly lowered the gloved hands that had pushed him.

For nearly ten seconds she simply stood there, listening.

No movement.

No voice.

No miracle.

At last, she smiled.

Five years.

That was how long she had waited.

Five years pretending to be the devoted wife of America's most admired billionaire.

Five years feeding him medicine.

Helping him into bed.

Pushing his wheelchair through charity galas while reporters called her "an angel."

Nobody knew that behind the cameras Adrian had become suspicious.

He had survived the helicopter crash that destroyed his spine.

He had survived endless surgeries.

But he had also begun quietly rewriting his will.

Sophia discovered the truth only two weeks earlier.

Instead of inheriting Blackwood Holdings, she would receive almost nothing.

Everything was being transferred into a confidential charitable trust.

She could not allow that.

Not after everything she had sacrificed.

Not after everything she had done.

She checked her watch.

7:42 p.m.

Perfect.

The security cameras along the hiking trail had already been disabled.

Her phone location had been cloned by a hacker she hired months ago.

Even Adrian's bodyguards believed the billionaire wanted to spend one final evening alone with his wife.

Every detail had been planned.

Every witness eliminated.

Or so she believed.

She bent down and picked up Adrian's wedding ring where it had landed near the cliff's edge.

The diamond still reflected the fading sunset.

She slipped it into her pocket.

"Goodbye."

Then she drove away.

By midnight, she had already begun crying for the police.

Her voice trembled perfectly.

"He wanted to watch the sunset."

"He lost control of the wheelchair."

"I tried to save him."

Television helicopters circled the cliffs all night.

Divers searched below.

Rescue drones scanned every inch of the coastline.

Nothing.

No body.

No wheelchair.

No blood.

The media called it a tragic accident.

The nation mourned.

Blackwood Holdings lost twelve billion dollars in market value before noon.

Sophia played the grieving widow flawlessly.

She wore black.

She refused interviews.

She allowed photographers to capture her crying beside Adrian's empty office.

Millions sympathized with her.

Three days later...

She signed the first inheritance documents.

Or tried to.

Attorney Michael Graves quietly closed the folder.

"I'm afraid we have a problem."

Sophia frowned.

"What problem?"

"There is no legal confirmation of death."

She forced a smile.

"The rescue teams searched everywhere."

Michael nodded.

"Without a body, Mr. Blackwood is legally considered missing."

"How long?"

He hesitated.

"In some circumstances... years."

Her smile disappeared.

"Years?"

"I'm sorry."

She left the meeting furious.

Years?

She had not murdered the richest man in Chicago to wait years.

That evening she returned to the mansion.

The house was unusually quiet.

Even the staff seemed nervous.

As she climbed the marble staircase, the old housekeeper approached with trembling hands.

"Mrs. Blackwood..."

"What?"

"This package arrived."

"There was no courier."

"No delivery record."

"No fingerprints."

Sophia opened the envelope.

Inside...

One photograph.

Nothing else.

The picture showed Adrian.

Standing.

Not sitting.

Standing on both legs.

Behind him stood a young woman holding a baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

The photograph had been taken twenty-eight years earlier.

On the back someone had written only six words.

YOU NEVER KNEW WHO HE REALLY WAS.

Sophia's hands began shaking.

Because Adrian had been paralyzed for only five years.

Who was the woman?

May you like

Who was the child?

And who had mailed the photograph... after Adrian disappeared?
