CHAPTER 4 — The Man Behind the Wheelchair

The entire nation watched the broadcast.
Adrian Blackwood was alive.
Bruised.
Bearded.
But unmistakably alive.
The live feed lasted only nineteen seconds before cutting to black.
Police traced the signal.
Nothing.
It had bounced through twelve countries before disappearing.
Sophia sat frozen inside the interrogation room.
Her attorney kept whispering that she had the right to remain silent.
She barely heard him.
Only one question echoed inside her mind.
If Adrian survived... who had she seen falling into the abyss?
Detective Rachel Monroe refused to believe in miracles.
People survived murder attempts.
People faked deaths.
People disappeared.
But they did not simply vanish off a 400-foot cliff.
She returned to Black Raven Point with forensic specialists.
This time they searched every inch of the cliff wall instead of the ocean below.
Six hours later, a rookie officer found something hidden beneath thick vines.
A narrow steel door.
Almost invisible.
Behind it...
An abandoned military elevator built during the Cold War.
The shaft descended nearly two hundred feet into solid rock.
Inside the underground chamber sat medical equipment.
Emergency food.
Satellite communication devices.
Fresh footprints.
Someone had been living there.
On one wall, written in black marker, were six chilling words:
"The first push wasn't yours."
Monroe stared at the sentence.
Someone else had tried to kill Adrian before Sophia ever did.
Meanwhile...
Attorney Michael Graves unlocked Adrian's private vault according to instructions left in a sealed envelope.
Inside were dozens of surveillance drives.
Each one labeled by date.
Each one containing secret recordings from inside Blackwood Mansion.
The first video showed Sophia secretly replacing Adrian's medication.
The second showed someone entering Adrian's bedroom at 2:11 a.m. wearing black gloves.
The face remained hidden.
The third recording stopped everyone cold.
It showed Adrian standing.
Not in a wheelchair.
Walking normally with the help of intensive rehabilitation.
He had regained the ability to walk nearly eight months before his disappearance.
Yet he had deliberately continued pretending to be disabled.
The room fell silent.
Michael whispered,
"He knew someone wanted him helpless."
Then another file appeared.

Its title read:
WATCH THIS ONLY IF I DISAPPEAR.
